we were watching this psychology series in intro when I was a freshman that was hosted by Zimbardo. we seriously watched like 5 of these. the whole time I was like I think I've heard of this guy. then on the last episode they talked about the stanford prison experiment. and I was like shit I knew I knew this guy.

If i were one of the prisoners I'm pretty sure I would have snapped and killed somebody, during or after the experiment.. mind you I think that's why they screened applicants before the experiment

psychology is fucking insane sometimes.

What was that one experiment with the younger kids where the teacher made half the class one thing, and half the class something else. Then told the one group they were better than the other group and the whole dynamic changed completely.


Humans are crazy. I find it really interesting though.

No, I know what he's saying though. Really wild experiment. Horrible, but interesting. I probably would have flipped out on the guards too, think of it, neither of you are right/wrong, basically 50/50 chance that you are a guard/prisoner, no rhyme or reason to it. All of a sudden you are either in power and start to abuse it, as this showed, or you are the one being abused. I probably would have fought back at some point and hit a guard.

That being said, you apply it to abu ghraib and it becomes a real life, fucking twisted reality. This sort of thing actually happened. The craziest part about this experiment is it was in a (relatively) controlled environment and when it happened in reality, it did exactly the same thing. Fascinating.

It's the weird transition that greys the lines.


They didn't jump right into the worst right at the start. It's that slide into it that creates the problems. Even at the rate it happened it was still incremental. By the time shit gets real you're already so fucked up you aren't yourself.


People so easily say, I would have fucked a guard up. You weren't in that situation. No need to make yourself sound cool. Who knows, maybe you would have hit a guard but you can just assume you would have reacted the way you would like to when you're in a situation that becomes that fucked up.

Six days am I right? Only reason why they stopped it was because zimbardo's girlfriend was so disgusted by it and told her she wanted nothing to do with him... I think after the guards started forcing sexual things on the prisoners they should have called it quits.

It was exactly the same, "The Colony" was directly based off the experiment. If anybodies watched "The Science of Evil" (I think that's the title) by Discovery/NatGeo you'll get a very good insight on the neurological aspects of the experiment. The documentary also does an in-depth interview with Zombardo that a lot of you will find interesting.

You're forgetting that the "prisoners" did nothing wrong and could have just as easily been a guard, they had no rhyme or reason for being treated like that other than slipping into the role of an authoritative figure.

Saying you would fuck up the guards is a completely fair statement, regardless of whether or not you were in the situation. That's not exactly the type of thing you could get over with as soon as the study is over... You would have some sort of PTSD, knowing you did nothing and were essentially De-humanized. I'm surprised that Zimbardo wasn't murdered following this... simply because of the prisoners mental state (being used to not being treated as an equal individual, having anxious breakdowns, that would bring out a bit of a violent sociopath in some people, I'm assuming)

He called it on 5th or 6th day during a "peer assessment" day, where he brought others in to observe. One of the women did in fact tell him he was disgusting and to stop it immediately which was the final notification that he needed to end it. It's also important to note that he absent mindedly took an authoritative position in the experiment, a Hitler like personality if you will. He noticed this while watching video of the "visitor" day when the prisoners family came, the position he placed his hands in was an indication, as well as the fact that he didn't necessarily speak, but just observed.

Oh for sure, I know it wasn't an immediate white to black scenario. It was a gradual breakdown, just saying I think at some point I probably would have snapped. I'm surprised that nobody did in the actual experiment.

this always seemed so bogus to me, I don't feel like it would change me either way, no matter how good they are at pretending you still know its fake and you can stop it whenever. The whole thing just seems silly and since its not real that means the actions carried out aren't really 'real' either. Its just a bunch of role playing carried out by people who are conscious of what their roles are supposed to be and were trying to live up to the most extreme versions of them.

no, a teacher tells a student not just to be a guard but to be an oppressive guard and the student obliges. google the 2002 bbc experiment. or basically any criticism and you'll see that the whole process was flawed and the results exaggerated.

I studied the Stanford experiment in psych class. The professor was more interested in the ethics of experiments than the results. And yes, the experiment ended when the subjects began sexually abusing the inmates. It was a fascinating experiment and it brought huge advances in social psychology. As cruel as the results were, we can now explain the irrational behavior of the most rationnal people you know.

The Newschoolers Experiment:


First we took a bunch of pre-teens that all share a passion for the same activity, skiing for example. We then separated the subjects into isolated rooms with only computers as a mean of communications with each other. The computer can only access one site- a site designed specifically around the love they all share for the same activity. The subjects were allowed to create "user names" in order to create the sense of anonymity. We called the site, Newschoolers.

The observations are still inconclusive but preliminary results show that the subjects show a complete turn-around in social behavior within hours of accessing Newschoolers. In person the subjects interacted with general kindness and consideration toward each other, on the site, however, the subjects became increasingly hostile, inconsiderate and overly sensitive. Commonly this hostility lead to threats of violence or of sexually assaulting another subject's female relatives.

While many hypotheses try to explain this phenomena, one theory is gaining popularity among many sociologists and psychologists. That theory suggests that pre-teens, when they're given the power of anonymity, forgo any social pressures and they act in their most natural state; as brainless jackasses.

This reminds me of one that was done at Harvard where the professor(I want to say Murphy) made these kids in a class sit through being seriously embarrassed and then made them watch it repeatedly. One of the people that he ran this on was Ted Kaczynski aka the Unabomber.
