That's saying if it doesn't turn into a popularity contest with NS seems to be like. The reason it works for reddit is its an anonymous community for the most part (if you don't count tags in RES or the RES's this user's score from your comment/content votes, as well as small sub reddits). People here know eachother, lots of which in real like whether it be bad or good. Most of the downvotes I see are just to downvote people they don't like regardless of what they say. They upvote their friends and downvote people they dislike for whatever reason.

Look at skiierman, I have nothing against him but many people just absolutely hate him with a fiery passion. Hell he could make a wonderful post about how something is and it would probably be downvoted because many take him seriously as an asshat. It's not a post by post basis like reddit is.

As for this thread, yea people bitch at eachother, its part of newschoolers and honestly it isn't even that bad, go over to TGR and you'll get your shit rocked. Say something bad on reddit and you'll be called out massively. OP cry more and suck it up, its the internet.

Reddit is completely different, as its not forums. It also isn't anything special, its just a standard commenting setup where there's voting and the conversations are threaded vs. linear.

I'd challenge you to actually look at the data and make sure that your assumptions are correct. For the most part, though it seems like it might go in the direction you're thinking, I'm not sure you're correct. So far, people have been upvoting good and downvoting bad, regardless of who it is. Skiierman would get downvoted a lot because he's a dick a lot - that is who he chooses to make his personality.

As well, something like that would never, ever, ever be default. It would simply be a feature that we could allow some people to use. Plenty of forums have a feature allowing you to block posts from certain users.

If teh data is there then we have the option. The NS community isn't as immature as everyone likes to make it out to e either. Its pretty normal for interwebz standards, and if the system is right people will push to keep it working.

Doug, please, never do this. If people want "negative posts" (arguably the most entertaining) hidden they can go to reddit. People wont even respond to a thread and just downrate a post of someone they dont like (ie me, ive seen it a couple times where i had a completely neutral post and it had -2 or -3 just because people dont "like" me)

Get over the reddit thing, reddit does not hide bad posts at all. They re-order comment threads, and a great deal of the time bad comments get upvoted.

I downvote your stupid fucking posts too when you're just being an asshole. You don't get voted down because people don't like you, you get downvoted because you act like a tool a lot of the time.

There are a huge amount of people that don't like looking at worthless hate, me included. Sure its funny, but not when its fucking dumb as shit. Funny hate posts will get upvoted, I'd bet you anything.

I never called it immature, honestly I think NS gets a bad rap of being chalked full of 12 year olds.

But having a system that in a way slows down postings by multiple members. Why add to the conversation when you can just upvote someone else's shit or downvote the asshat that was "wrong" in your eyes without putting your opinion out there? It slows down the forum to where people don't get replies or really interest after a certain point. I'm not trying to take this to the extreme of its "going to kill the forums!!!111", but it's either going to restrict posting from people(in both good and bad ways) or just become meaningless like karma.

Because of the 90/9/1 rule of the internet.

Only 1% of the people that come to NS actually ever post. The voting system gives 11% of the traffic the chance to rank what is being said. I doubt very much that people who like to post will be silenced by the fact that they can just click an up or downvote button.

You're reacting emotionally without looking at facts. There are huge numbers of sites on the internet that allow ranking of posts, and it doesn't slow people from posting at all - most of the time it increases it because people can easily find the stuff they want to post on.

I don't care if people downvote me when im being an asshole, but when i post a perfectly neutral post, ie someone says "what color is the sky" and ill say " the sky is blue" but my post is -3 because people dislike me because of other posts i might make. this will happen with other people too like jamie, gus, skiierman, ar6, etc members that might be dicks for fun on ns because well thats what people do on ns. i doubt any post ive made in the past two weeks has a positive rating and i think its safe to say 1/2 of those posts are neutral and/or helpful.

Just trying to post my opinion and give you guys feedback.

But its not your fault NS is getting insanely soft, this thread is a great example. In 2005 if you made a thread like this you'd get "owned".

Some good research there. Id agrue the first thread was at like 4am and no one was there but the second thread is a good use of the rating system, 15 people agreed with the person i nominated for thread.

Now the 3rd, im glad you posted this. I will admit i got carried away and whatever but my ORIGINAL post was a simple opinion. who cares if you agree with it, i was completely entitled to what I said and would argue it didnt deserve -50. I went on in that thread calling out kids for not talking shit and just downvoting me, which i think is the worst part of the new rating, its very passive aggressive and promoted people to not post their opinions but simple just downrate a post. Maybe this is what you guys want people to do, but i think its a cop-out. if a kid wants to disagree with me, i want them to say it, not hit downvote. Maybe im just too far gone with the forums, i tell myself every day i should just stop posting.

Whatever tho, i understand you guys are just trying to expand the forums and rating systems. you guys have so much more going on on the back end that any of us could even fathom. I just dont want the heart and soul of NS to be gone aka talking shit and trolling.

Please never make it so you can hide posts or have positive posts on top and negative on the bottom. As long as you guys don't do that I won't care what you do with the rating stuff.

See I think the thing with that 3rd thread is that you made an opinion, but it was one that wasn't necessarily agreed upon. You didn't really make it in an eloquent fashion, so it could be up to interpretation as to whether or not it was an attack. In that case I think its less of your reputation and more of your actions in the rest of the thread that enhance the negative spin on what you were saying. Like as I read it, if your first post was isolated I'd think it was a neutral post, but with how you acted the rest of the time it changed the connotation of the first one.

I also don't think anything would be different whether or not there was ratings. The exact same amount of shit would have happened - which was a few people getting in a super heated argument amongst themselves. This is how it goes on sites that thread their conversations, the few people that just want to start namecalling simply break off into their own little world and call each other idiots repeatedly. Then the rest of the site up and down votes that conversation based on if its funny or just childish.

The question is why would you care if people had the ability to sort posts differently? Do you have something deep inside of you that needs others to see your trolling hateful posts? Why can't someone else feel that the 'heart and soul' of NS is helpful discussion vs. taking shit and trolling?

The fact is that as things grow there are more people with different needs. We need to help everyone tune their experience to sort through the stuff they don't like.

Hell, with ratings, you could sort everything into the most negative troll-fest hatemongering threads of all time and get your rocks off fighting to oblivion with people that wanted to do the same thing. I'd for fucking SURE look at those threads, as it would be absolutely hilarious.

Overall nothing is changing other than we want to have the ability to give people a customizable NS experience.

I guess I'm just afraid of change. NS is in my roots ive been posting here for 9 years, ns is the internet to me ya know? You know what im talking about, I KNOW you know the old days. But, its 2013, not 2005, things change. Im sure ill get used to it and in a month i wont even care, im just being an old hag who doesnt want things to change. People like me arent the majority on NS anymore so you guys are right to appeal to the masses.

Overall, ratings to matter to me because I look at a ton of threads, i might miss one or two here and there but i dont need a top rated list or a least rated section to see the best/worst post. I know there are other like me but there are way more people who arent me.

This is insanely true. I learned quickly on NS to not make just pointless threads or rant/whine, because you got demolished by the more elder/tenured members.

I also think this is a bigger issue of the direction the country has taken. They hand out medals to everyone in little league now, some leagues don't keep score because they don't want the "losers" to feel bad. It no only makes said kid feel good for the time, but it makes him weaker in the long run. The job market is as competitive as anyone can believe, people aren't going to just hand out jobs because they feel bad about your feelings...

There is a general "softening" in the entire country and the younger/newer NSers use the forums to whine and complain about everything when one member has something to say or disagree. Sadly it is something that can't just be changed by newschoolers, but our entire country has to do divert the direction it's headed.
