wow, the rest of the world argument, really, i could care less about what the rest of the world thinks, i dont want to be the rest of the world, ive spent almost 2 years worth of time in other parts of the country and i do not want the type of pointless restrictions they have to deal with (not that we dont have our own..)
anyway, you want to discuss the rest of the world in relation to gun laws? lets look at some comprable countries.. unfortunately, Mexico and Parts of South America are more comprable than Europe. We have a gang and crime problem as bad and in some cases worse than a lot of the crime ridden south american countries. We have 1.4 million gang members in 30,000 gangs, and that number is rapidly growing. gang members and career criminals account for over 80% of gun related deaths in this country. so lets compare ourselves with some countries with very strict gun control laws. Brazil, Jamaica, Mexico, Swaziland, South Africa, etc.. and they have some of the highest gun crime rates in the world. and like the US, its the gang members and criminals doing the killing, with illegally acquired guns. Im not saying that strict gun laws create more crime necessarily, though in some ways i may agree with that, im saying, it doesnt have an effect.
just like in those countries, the guns that are killing people here, are traded illegally, gang members, career criminals and convicted felons arent going into gun stores and buying traceable guns..
when you look at the gun death rate when it comes to non criminal/gang related crime, we arent that bad, percentage wise we really arent worse than most of europe. but because we are such a blind and stupid public, we completely ignore where the real problem is, and try to focus on something that MIGHT effect a fraction of a percent of our gun violence.
And yes, the people who oppose stricter gun control usually do oppose public health care, because our health care bill is fucked, we need healthcare reform, for sure, but what they are trying to enact is so unbelievably ridiculous when you get into the details, anyone with a hair of common sense would oppose it. and aside from that, a lot of americans like their freedom, and to be left alone, so it only makes sense they would oppose something forcing them to buy something and also something that infringes on their right to bear arms.
and just like our health care bill, the proposed gun control measures are also fucked, they make no sense, and wont make a scratch on our gun violence here. they are focusing on irrelevant "issues" rather than looking at the actual problem, legal gun owners are not the problem, and even more so, things like high capacity magazines are not even close to a problem, concealed carry holders are not a problem. they contribute to the smallest fractions of gun violence here, but because the public thinks with emotion rather than their brain, we think "oh "assault" rifles are scary looking!", "why should people be able to carry a gun under their jacket?" etc.. these politicians focus on the scary, emotional side of guns, and use it to gain more control over the public and take more of our rights away. and look, it works for you! you obviously think high cap magazines, concealed carry, etc.. is stupid, but those are simply not relevant to our gun crime problem.
anyone who thinks the politicians are truly limiting magazine capacity to reduce gun crime is simply uneducated on the issue. government likes control, and thats what they are seeking, there is no way they would be looking at possibly the smallest factor in gun related death as one of the main problems if they really wanted to fix it.
