Abortion and euthanasia

Cardinal Bergoglio has invited his clergy and laity to oppose both abortion and euthanasia.[3]

Homosexuality

He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are gay. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage. In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by gays and lesbians is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".[4]

I am pro life anti gay marraige and think dinasaurs are the same thing as unicorns and didn't exist. I would be offended as hell if my Pope viewed things like that differently.

Unfortunately normal opinions like mine are unpopular and most people probably think I am trolling but its how I feel about those things.

well said. Not a fan that this man, elected by a bunch of other old men, spread some pretty dated views that are usually misunderstood by many. I also dislike the amount of power the church has in general, from the insane amount of money they receive and the amount of stuff they cover up.

I am very excited to see what Francis I does with the Catholic Church. I really hope he moves the Church forward in a positive direction, and he seems to me to be already someone that I can relate to. The fact that he chose the name Francis and the fact that he is Argentinian are already very impressive. Yes, I don't agree with everything that he says/believes or all of the beliefs/traditions of the Church. I really hope he connects with the youth, embraces social media, and is at the forefront of the modernization of Catholicism.

They replaced an impotent old man with another impotent old man.  Heaven forbid they pick someone with oratory skills, some form of youthful exuberance and even a stitch of progressive thinking on their body to win the hearts and minds of people around the globe. 

'Cause, y'know, that would put a fresh face on the Catholic church.  Not that they need one or anything.  Lol.

He is the first Pope since the original from outside of Europe. He is the first Pope form Latin America. He was elected on 5 ballots. He is the first Pope to take the name of Francis. He is the first Jesuit Pope. The first thing he asked for was silence.

All of these signs are CLEAR indicators that he is going to be sympathetic to certain reformations of the Church and is going to advance further the social action necessary to propel the Church forward. Things within the Vatican aren't going to change overnight, but he is a step in the right direction. He connects the old world with the new world.

You are absolutely correct that my terminology was off, but I think you know what I was getting at even though I'm clearly off my meds and running with scissors.  I'd love to see the racist catholics in this country mentally deal with having black pope though, I must say.

Why were people so excited that Barack Obama was the first black man elected president?

The fact that he is from outside of Europe means that the Cardinals who elected him are past prior tradition and are breaking the status quo. Francis I was elected in a historic act of reform.

The name Francis comes from Saint Francis of Assisi, the saint who is known for his humility, social action, and environmental concern. He didn't take the name of the Jesuit founder Ignatius which is what many people predicted he would. This is a guy who takes the bus to work and prefers to live a humble life - he's more concerned with global issues than his own self.

Jesuits are generally less conservative than the mainstream of Catholics, and Pope Francis is seen as a person who is willing to find compromise between traditionalist and liberal beliefs. His gracious and welcoming, and unique nature of his first speech was also indicative that this isn't a traditional papal exchange.The silence at the beginning of his speech is a direct symbol that he is going to put the people's needs before anything. This is something that needs to be done within the Church - economic reform is DEFINITELY going to need to be a top priority of the new Pope.

I could go on for hours, but if you turn on CNN or any other news network you can kind of get a better idea of why I am so confident he will be a reformer.

 how can you feel all of this after only knowing hes the Pope for an hour? He has some election program somewhere with viewpoints and ideas on what he wants to do with the church?

To me, the catholic church is the manifestation of oppression, a reactionary institution that ever since the dark ages been punishing and hateing on people and groups with differing opinions.

If the Pope is here to teach and uphold the words of God I cant really see a change in the organization of the catholic church ever, since it isnt very likely that God will suddenly change his mind about, well anything

How can I feel all this? Because I listened to him speak and have researched who he is and whT he believes. I know that I support his commitment to the environment, social justice peace, and he is to me relatable because he is so humble. He isn't a man who puts himself on a pedestal, he takes the city bus to work everyday. He personally doesn't believe in contraception or homosexuality yet made a historic visit to a South American AIDS clinic and personally washed the feet of a patient. That's how I can feel all of this.
