Hey editors! Quit changing the fucking camera angle

With all these threads about dub cork 7s it has reminded me how much I hate when an edit is supposed to be showcasing a trick (especially a different trick) and they change camera angles half way though. I don't know if you are trying to hide the fact that its not executed or you think its good editing.

If you are trying to show off a new trick, pick a good angle and show it beginning to end. DowntoFilm, you make good shit but you were just wondering why noone noticed the handdrag dub 7. I'm going to say it's because the camera angle sucked and then it changed half way through.

Anyone with film experience will tell you that more angles = better. You can make the shot look way better by getting a sick shot of the takeoff and maybe a follow on the landing. Looks way better than a longer, mediocre shot of the entire trick.

it can affect viewers perspective. in the northface add for Tom W, it looks like he does a triple when he only does a double.

Anyone with film experience will tell you when you stitch two angles together of different hits that something is usually fishy.

Different angles rule. Lets you check out the trick from all sides, take off and landing. Also that take off angle that Zac shot from is super unique and really shows the handrag well.

OP does follow cam with his go pro.

Althought I like multiple angles, different angles switching halfway between the trick is really annoying I'm not going to lie. At least in the persepective of having it straight on. I think multiple angles from like an on ground vs a bird's eye view would be sick.

Come on man, he was trying to give constructive criticism. It's kind of like how North Face fucked up their commercial of Twall doing a triple. You cant tell what the fuck is going on because they don't show the full shot.

there was a thread on here a while back when the jet engine ad was released.

unless someone was trolling his account, tom wrote that they took two different shots, one of which was a double and one of which was a triple and put them together, quite awkwardly.

As I said, I really like your stuff, Evan as well. I'm not saying that double angles are bad all the time. The point of my post was that if you are trying to showcase a new or unique trick, seeing it flow, start to finish gives the best perspective. It allows people to accurately take in the whole trick as one. Very relevant when you are trying display a sometimes debatable trick like a dub 7.

eh. it depends, there have definitely been instances where it's done poorly like TNF ad and some dub seven video I saw, but for the most part filmers know what they are doing and people like eheath and downtofilm are on top of their game.

The TNF ad is an anomaly, they wanted the effect of the dub 12 but didnt have a landing shot so they butchered the cut, the main people they want to impress don't even ski so I doubt TNF really gives a fuck.

2 things:

1: if it isn't edited poorly, it's usually not confusing at all.

2: I can't stand when the filmer doesn't use two cameras on the shot so the skier has to do the trick twice, making a noticeable difference in the trick between angles. ..Grinds my gears

most people like evan and zac film 2 angles of every trick for their edits which is great.

one angle for new tricks is a understandable, or one of the takeoff and landing and show the whole trick from each

i do too, but it's the sudden switch in the midle of tricks that are annoying

feel free to swtich from a jibcrane on a nuckle to a follow cam, but not in the middle of the fckng trick.

Op is retarded. If you only follow cam the jump can get in the way. The more angles you have, the more shots to cut between. Cut shots look very nice and can change for the better

The op isn't saying that all double angles are bad. DTF made a thread asking how the dub 7 in his edit was overlooked, and that is probably due to the double angles.

Doing angle changes when you pull off a good transition and time it well they turn out really good, but sloppy ones ruin it for sure

The reason being is because it's not so much spliced its more that when you cut to the angle at the landing of the jump it back tracks just a second or so from the previous angle so that way it kind of refreshes the people's memories from where the trick as was at in the previous angle.

More people need to use this style or technique, I feel that they get into splicing it and then it becomes very close to feeling like you cut out part of the trick and its very annoying.

Exactly, when done right - like this - it's fine. I've just noticed in recent edits that it's done in such a way that it stands out, which is annoying because it takes your focus off the viewing.

they did this for all of the shots at x games big air this year. they changed the angle right when the skier was at the lip, and it drove me NUTZ because i just wanted to see the whole trick in one shot, for the sake of watching the trick happen. watch right at 0:10 here, when the camera changes right in the middle of the butter to an angle from the other side, so you miss half of the butter and then hes spinning the opposite direction from his wind up. this just makes it more difficult to watch and understand than if the camera was placed somewhere that has a view of the take off and the landing.



so i agree with OP, when a new trick is being done and you just want people to see the trick itself, like a big air contest, keep it as a smooth angle. if youre throwing other, more standard, tricks that people have seen before, switching angles midway is a great way to make the trick look better than it would normally, and if it makes the trick look better than it did before, then thats just good editing.

I love it when banger shots are filmed and shown all the way though in one angle and then repeat the shot from another angle.  I think a good example of this was Tom's zero spin in Turbo.

I think this is exactly the OP's point. For a good edit multiple camera angles are essential, but if someone is trying to showcase a particular trick it might be better to find the one angle that does so best.

I see where OP is coming from, but usually it's just the result of poor editing, not the fact that they used two angles.

The way I see it, as long as at least one of the angles shows the entire trick, then you're good to go. That's kind of a rule I always use for myself. If I want to cut the first shot after the takeoff for example, the next angle starts back at the takeoff and plays the whole trick through.

I find it gets confusing if you cut a trick, and then start the next angle at the exact same point in the trick. Cuts happen fast, so the viewer can easily lose the middle of the trick during a cut.
