Anyone tried this?
Are you able to take a longboard as a carry-on?

Yea just put it in the overhead compartments, I've seen it done multiple times.

Do it all the time, you shouldn't have a problem. Place it below the seat or up above, never been a problem.

Check with your airline first. Even then, it's a toss up.
I flew from LGA (New York) to Shannon (Ireland). On the way out I put my board in the overhead and it was not an issue. The TSA agent at security was stoked that I longboarded and we chatted for a bit about it.
When I was coming back I got shit from the security guy and had to turn around and check my longboard. Longboards count as blunt weapons. When I got to NY my board was all scuffed up.
I would recommend checking it in the first place and finding a safe way to check it. It depends on how long your board is and who you're traveling with.
My deck was 37" and I was flying aer lingus.

I know for southwest it's a certain dimension that determines if a bag can be a carry on, idk about others

I strapped mine to my backpack and put it in the overhead compartment on one flight and then put it under my feet on the 2nd flight. I never got hassled about it once. Only had people ask me why it said buttkutt (my nickname) in the griptape.

just take a big ass duffel bag and throw it in the bottom and pack the rest of your shit in it. I did this flying from boston to la and it was easy as fuck

Depends how long it is, my board is 42 inches and Delta made me check is as oversized baggage.
