Back protection?

Hey guys,

What are your thoughts on back protection? (Ex: POC http://www.backcountry.com/poc-spine-ergo-bug-armor )

I was wondering whether or not it actually helps reduce injury in the event of a bad slam to the back. I'm looking to get flippy soon and was wondering whether or not this is a worthwhile investment or a placebo.

Is back protection legitimate? Any models you'd recommend?

Yo check out Gform padding, I use it. It doesent look like your even wearing it.

I'd say these are a necessity if you're going into the deep BC and hucking 50-100 ft. cliffs, but other than that, you don't need one. If by "flippy" you mean flips...there's no flip you can do when you're just learning that will fuck you up so bad you will sustain a serious back injury. Hit an appropriate jump, with a reasonable trick, and a well off idea of your own abilities, and you'll be fine.

I use the POC VPD Vest and it has saved me from a shitload of backpain. You don't have to experience near-death injuries to use one. I've used mine in casual park riding and the vest has taken hits from rails and boxes as well as jumps, that might not have been huge hits capable of some serious damage, but would've left me with an annoying backpain the following days.

My point being: If u can afford one, are comfortable in wearing one and if you want to have better protection from major AND minor back injuries, GO GET A PROTECTOR

I wear a Scott one cause I have an injured back that I don't want to get worse. I'd say it helps when you backslap like 50+ footers

Like I said gform padding, kali protectives, six six one, dakine, poc, and so many others. They all help.

Ive been using a poc vod vest this year i got it for 100 btw it has saved me a few times i used to get really bad back pain whenever i fell on it and now i never get that if u can afford it get it otherwise its not that big of a deal to not have one

Same with me. These are incredible. They are really soft and plyable. So you won't even notice it. But when you hit it, it gets nice and firm and protects you. I barely even notice when mine is on. And it's helped in multiple falls.

Absolutely worth it. I don't ski without mine and the rock gouges in the plastic tell me that I would at very least have some nasty holes in my back if I hadn't been wearing it in one particular fall.

Reading this makes me think I should go out and get one. Just wondering if I really need one though considering I ski with a 30L pack most of the time.

I'm interested... I only sending 10-20 footers but after a hard day I can get some back pain. I wonder if it would help?

Nah, it more helps with the kind of back pain you get from slamming your spine into things. I don't wear mine with my pack, but any other time it goes on. There's no downside, only benefits to wearing one.

I've never quite seen the push for the ski-marketed back protectors in the BC. If you're really in the BC you'll have a backpack with shovel etc. that acts as a protector against impact, which is what most of these are targeted towards. If -like somebody said in an above post- you are going to be hitting 50-100 footers, invest in something that not only protects from impact, but also from force trauma to the spine. One of the biggest huckers I've ever ridden with swore by his motocross back-brace.
