what do you guys think is a good way to zoom quickly and smoothly using a DSLR? i was thinking that some sort of clamp attached to the lens and moving that while filming would be something worth trying. Any thoughts? I know it wouldn't be perfect

Threads. Maybe a follow focus attached to the zoom ring? But the lens still might not be smooth and it could be jerky or something.

But a camera with a zoom function, DSLR lenses aren't made to zoom while filming they're made for photos

Ive done it before using a follow focus on the zoom ring. As long as you have a lens with a fixed aperture you should be good generally. you have to be mega smooth though and long/slow zooms dont look that great. I love my paddle zoom

Ridiculous

I'm building this for my 4th year Engineering Physics project at UBC. I assembled the first prototype today, but the servo I'm using didn't have enough torque (due to my gear ratios).

We're cutting some new gears, mounts, etc and rebuilding some time next week hopefully. I'll upload pictures/video when it become somewhat functional...

Here's basically what we're trying to build:

yes i understand that, I just want to be able to zoom in for a short fragment of a project i am working on. I have no intention of using it when I am skiing or for long zooms.

how quick are you talking? you could do the follow focus or if on a tripod just use your hand. ive seen that done pretty well with a 24-105L lens but i don't know if that is a smoother ring than others
