New feature in the forums

Hey everyone,

Wanted to let you all know about an exciting new feature that's coming to the forums later this week...the ability to rate individual posts.

We've made the decision to add this feature because it will do much a better job of determining the best quality threads via ratings (which will in turn appear on the homepage) in a more accurate way, as opposed to an overall thread rating.

Please note that this feature will NOT change or affect the ordering of posts or threads, as we will never get rid of the ability to view forums by the latest added view. It will simply act as a way for you to determine the best quality threads and the ones that show up on the homepage.

In addition to this heads up, we're looking for some people to help us test this feature and provide feedback, so if you're interested, please send me a PM.

As much as i still find it to be a stupid concept, I retract my statements of how much of a role it plays, because after it being there for a while I realize ratings mean absolutely nothing.

I find myself not using karma anymore, I haven't up/downrated somones karma in weeks. It's literally gonna be never I don't think, don't see the point anymore.

I really don't like how up/down voting a comment affects the thread rating. I don't understand why it should.

Top shit talkers. That is exclusively forum usage.

I think that trying up/down rating into Karma is a logical next step. However, make it more like an aggregate thing, so the amount that you up and down vote someone's posts affects your 1- 10 rating of them. Something like that is pretty possible.

As to why it affects the overall score of the thread, well this is because we just decided to try it - and frankly I think its pretty darn accurate. THe problem is that you can't think that just because a thread is all red / half red it is BAD. Very good threads can have a ton of downvotes because they're funny or controversial.

The thread rating works perfectly if you don't think of the scale as bad-medium-good, you need to think negative-controversial-lollipopsandrainbows

The good controversial threads all make it into the hot listings too in the way they should. All the activity allows us to calculate that its a thread of interest, even if its both up and down activity.

This is something that has bothered me actually...I don't get why someone like Kangbang (just using because he was already brought up) with a 3.71 rating is higher on a list than me with a 9.00 rating...I understand it has to do with post count, but I feel like that's too important in this system so it comes down to you can't be anywhere near the top members list without post whoring every day.

has the up/down system been incorporated into the karma system? this thread hasn't been updated in a while and i wonder if there have been any under the cover updates that have done so. like some other users, i find myself using up/down rating more than karma up/down.

the feature has definitely grown on me since its inception. i found myself using it more and more and now routinely vote on posts. i think the system so far has been a success, although it would be awesome if we could sort posts by most up/down etc. i think the current organization of old-->new should be kept as default though. NS wouldn't be the same if the replies were by default dynamically arranged.
