In ’03 or ’04 (I can’t remember which) on my day off I was riding up the Whistler gondy. Luckily for me I got off at mid-station to grab a drink from my work (mid-station Beavertails). I got back on and rode up with a couple guys who were smoking a blunt. As was more often than not the case at the time I was drinking fireball so I hooked them up with some of that and they let me in on the blunt. There must have been some patrollers going the other way on the gondola that saw us passing the blunt, because when we got to the top there were a bunch of patrollers waiting for us. They said “enjoy today boys, it’s your last of the season” and took our passes. Obviously losing your pass under any circumstances sucks balls but I was extra screwed because I needed my pass to get to work. I appealed it (and my boss stepped up huge to back me up), saying I had never met the other guys before and it was just them that were blazing, not me. They probably didn’t believe me (with good reason) but because I had gotten off at mid-station and my pass had been scanned 10 or 15 minutes before theirs and had never previously been scanned at the same time (ie. we did not appear to know each other) I won the appeal and got my pass back. The best part of all was that the way I found out I was getting it back was a call from someone from Intrawest who had obviously been forced to apologize to me and was obviously really not happy about it, asking “if I was satisfied with the way it had been handled.” The best part about THAT was at the time of the call I was heading down the gondola from work (they had been giving me day passes while it got worked out) smoking a joint with my boss.
