Wanaka/Queenstown in August, BIG need of suggestions

Hi everyone
I need your help!
This August I want to go to New Zealand to ski so I was thinking about Queenstown or Wanaka! The fact is, on the Internet I found out that Wanaka is less far from cadrona than Queenstown and has a free transport to the mountain, but that in Queenstown there are more things to do and that it is funnier. Do you have any suggestions?
Another thing, I'd like to go there for 2/3 weeks but I'd like to find a host family, better if with some freeskiers so I could go and shred with them! Any ideas? How could I do?
Thanks everyone!

Wanaka has snow kiting though... but I'd say Queenstown is better for a well rounded trip.

It depends where you want to ski. Wanaka is smaller and more laid back. I like Wanaka better but Queenstown does have more going on.

If you are going to ski Cardrona you wanna be in Wanaka, and not take the road from Queenstown everyday it SUCKS, there is NO transport to the mountains for less then 35 dollars a day, you either will be hitchhiking or find a friend with a car or rent a car ( Renting a car is your best option, share the car with someone and your good ). If you wanna be a tourist go to Queenstown, if you wanna experience the sick freestyle mountain life go to Wanaka, if you enjoy shopping go to Queenstown. QT is a City Wanaka is a Town, it's whatever you like. If your looking for a cheapish place try the Purple Cow.

Queenstown is an amazing place- wicked bars, chill and adventurous people, lots to do and just overall good vibes but getting to and from the mountain can be difficult and expensive (everything is expensive actually). Just do your research and know what you are getting into. But none the less, when I went there I had THE greatest time so I strongly recommend it. Also (as you probably already know) it is breathtakingly beautiful there.
