you're going to get some hate for posting Mumford and Sons as your favourite banjo music.


listen to some Bela Fleck though, your mind will be fucked if you think Mumford and Sons is good banjo music.

Mumford and Sons IS good banjo music though.. it might not be incorporated so much in all of their songs but the songs that the banjo is in, are good.

it is pretty mainstream admittedly, but i still really like them, at least their first album anyways, all the riffs in their second album sound like one's from the first though which is disappointing

it's catchy, I'm not denying that. great in that sense. but I'm talking about good as in skill and complexity. it's like saying the sex pistols were good musicians. they made good music, but they were pretty god awful musicians (most of them anyways).

I mean compare one of Mumford's banjo riffs, maybe in this song:




to this:




Mumford and Sons is completely amateur banjo-wise compared to some others.

definitely check out Bela Fleck and the Flecktones like it has already been mentioned.

My personal favorite is Otis Taylor. He plays "trance-blues" and puts on one hell of a good show. You might recognize Ten Million Slaves or Nasty Letter. Here are a few songs from his album "recapturing the banjo"





and then probably the baddest version of Hey Joe every recorded (There is a banjo specific version on the previously mentioned album):
