the new ones are so pussied up compared to what the old ones used to be like. If i was getting a new car this point, personally id go with a jeep grand cherokee
I use to love audis, quattro is the worst 4w drive system ever. Got stuck multiple times in an s4 the other weekend in only a few inches where my Subaru would have beasted through
Really? Because I got stuck in 6 inches of snow the other day in my 2009 Toyota 4Runner with locking diffs and ATRAC. I have some shitty worn-out highway tires that were completely clogged with ice, but it must have been the 4wd system that made me get stuck, right?
in my allroad i have not once gotten stuck, and i only lose traction when i turn off traction control. we got 10+ inches the other day and i took my car into a field and even with summer tires i got full traction when i needed it, it even pulled and outback out of a drift.
The quattro sends power to wheels when it needs it. At times only 2 wheels were spinning when we were stuck and trying to push out. I'm an awd fan myself
its because it was an S series, they have a more "sporty" awd system, they dont even have quattro, hence the "S" on the grille. i think if you drove a quattro you would think differently.
You'll get that with any AWD car that doesn't have locking diffs. Subaru claims "symmetrical AWD" but that's somewhat misleading. Just because it "can" send the necessary power to each wheel doesn't mean it will.. Quattro uses a Torsen center diff, as does the Subaru. My 4Runner also uses a Torsen diff. The AWD systems are really similar between the two brands so I'm surprised you noticed that much of a difference. The point of my post is that there can be numerous factors involved that weren't considered.
I have a 2001 xterra and it makes for a great ski vehicle. Solid, rugged and basic. If you are looking for something fancy full of comforts, it's not really your thing. But if you want something you can use and abuse day after day, this is a good way to go. I'd suggest a ski box on the roof to put the skis in, as the cargo area is a little short and leaves more room for passengers. If you can find an older one in good shape for cheap go for it.
I'm currently looking at xterras and 4 runners to replace my honda pilot. both are good cars but pretty much everyone I have talked to has said th 4 runner is a better all around car. just as good offroad and way better on road. I also like the roll down back window of the 4 runner. Check out 4 runner and xterra blogs and you will get all the information yyou need
