We're putting my 16 year old golden down tomorrow...

I'm 21. Some of my very first memories on this Earth were of my dog Sarah (golden retriever). I feel so lucky to have had her live this long, but her health has declined really fast over the past week. I'm at college, her at home, and I can't even say goodbye or anything and it sucks. She has literally been there through so much shit in my family and has really been one of the only constant and reliable things to count on in my life.

Im sorry man, we had to put my dog down a few months ago. Hed been with me since I was 4, and basically always been a part of my life. But you did the best thing you can do for a dog and thats give it a great loving life.

we had to put my homie down in january... worst month of my life. he was 10 and I'm 20 so he was really like a brother to me. not to mention he was 165 pounds so his presence around my house is really missed. he was my dude, and I hope you get through this shit sorry for your loss

I've also been through it, and its not an easy thing to get over. But, as my story was too, our dog was very sick and it was her time to go.

golden retrievers are probably some of the best, friendliest and happiest dogs i know of. i'm sure she had a happy life while being a part of your family. RIP

Shit dude... Dogs truly have a bond with us that is impossible to replace. Such an unconditional love for you no matter what and they always are able to cheer you up!

thats shitty. We had to put down my 15 year old golden when i was 18. I am now 30 and have a 5 year old golden of my own. I cant imagine life without him. Major vibes dude ++++

Sucks man, went through this a year or two ago with my childhood yellow lab. Really sad especially when you grow up with it, it really becomes you best friend. My fam got a new dog I'm cool with an now me and my gf live together with the dog she raised who's now about 6, but we've been together for about the same time so me and her dog are close. I'm getting weird just thinking about it, but there's really nothing like that dog you grew up with, went through a lot of stuff with, changed as a person with. Good luck man sorry to hear about it. On mobile now leering how to use an iPhone so there are bound to be a ton of mistakes

Fuck this is depressing but she lived 16 years and a very good life, ahh I remember finding my cat dead in my room. She was still breathing and everything but not waking up. I took her to the vet next to my house and they wouldn't allow me to take her in because I technically wasn't the owner my parents were. It was so fucked and made absolutely no sense at fucking all. Those pricks didn't know what the fuck they were doing telling me that my cat is still breathing, I fucking knew its still breathing its not waking up, or responding to anything. I let them have it. I then had to call my friend he picked me up we drove 5 minutes to another animal hospital and they found out that her brain wasn't functioning so they put her down.

RIP, Sarah. I'm so sorry.

After we put my dog down (10 yrs old, I was 18), I found it helpful to think that every time I thought about him afterward it was like him checking in on me. Sarah's not going anywhere dude, she'll be there for ya.

not really she was 18 that's really old for a dog things die I've accepted that plus i knew her time was soon. I knew she was on her death bed cooked her a hamburger she ate half of it, then died an hour. buried her in the back yard got a new dog 2 weeks later. who knows maybe i just have no soul.

I didn't read any of the posts-- just yours--and all I have to say is that I wish you the best in moving on from losing your friend. I know first hand it is VERY hard. Do not feel ashamed if it takes you a very long time to move on, but at the same time, do not feel guilty if you try to move on quickly-- there are other dogs and animals that are out there that need your love (she'd understand!). All I can say, is that I hope you focus on the positive...think of all the laughter and love, and don't even think about final moments or passing. Good, long lives full of love are meant to be celebrated, not mourned.

I'm currently in South Dakota for my Grandmas funeral, btw...so I guess I have a little something in common with you right now.

I'm not saying she shouldn't have died. She lived a really long life and we are really lucky she did. It's just sad to see her go. My parents probably won't get another dog so coming home is gonna be a sad reminder of her when I walk into the door and she isn't there to greet me.

I didn't read the others yet, but I feel ya man.
My dogs 5 and we're gonna have to put him down this week. We got him from the shelter and he's an Australian shepherd/ husky mix. We just found out he has lymphoma.
We got him right after we had to put our 1 year old yellow lab down because he had a heart condition.

I'm really sorry to hear man. A couple years ago (I was freshly 20) my German Shepherd passed of bone marrow cancer. Love that dog with all of my heart. One of the smartest and kindest, but believe me, he whooped some behind in his prime) dogs I've ever known. It was heartbreaking, really messed me up for a little while. I grew up with that pup. We ended up getting lucky at the Animal Hospital that wasn't our normal vet (we found out about the cancer less than 12 hours before he died, it was an extremely progressive case combined with pancreus problems) and they let us take him home while he was still barely there and gave us an extra sedative incase he lived until morning and we could bring him to our local Vet to get put down.

Before anyone says thats horrible we didn't just put him down right away, just keep your opinion to yourself. He was on plenty of pain meds, and we had some incase he made it through the night, which we were assured he wouldn't, and he didn't. We brought him home because the Animal Hospital said they legally would have to cremate him if they put him down, adn my dad and I both agreed we would bury the 130lb beast at home, in his own backyard, his castle. There is no worse feeling than having to say goodbye while they lay there and stare at you, but don't have the power to move or even lick your face one last time. Sure enough, at 6 am the next morning my dad, younger brother and I burried him, hand dug the grave as the sun rose.

Now I'm all teary eyed.

my dog died when he was 14. I was 19 at the time so for all but 5 years of my life he has been there. It really sucks seeing them go. The worst part about it was having nothing walking around the house being stoked on life, its just weird. Thankfully my parents who said they wernt going to get a new dog missed having a dog around so we rescued a dog. The new dog is very different than our old one but she is equally as awesome.
