So I'm going to buy an iMac for video/photo use. I know I could build one for cheaper blah blah but I'm getting a damn Mac. Anyways do you think upgrading the processor from the 3.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 to the 3.4GHz i7 is worth the $180 for video editing? I'd be going with 16GB of memory and the upgrade on the video card.
IMO not totally necessary but if you have the cash do it up. A fully loaded iMac would be a dream for me ($3500) but I went for PC and got a better computer for $1400. I know you don't want a PC but just saying, I'm more just jelly. Doing the graphics card upgrade will be another not totally necessary thing but why buy something thats not the highest end? Honestly you might save like $500 but in a year it will be "outdated" ya know? Always safe to buy high end computer components, they have better resale value.
Thanks for the insight guys. Sometimes your time is worth a lot. For me to feel comfortable building a computer and making sure it's exactly what I want would cost me too much time that I just don't have right now and I'll be making a fair amount of money off of using this computer. I would never buy this thing if I didn't plan on making 5-6 times it's cost in work over the next year or two.
Yes qfag I'm not a fucking moron. They are very high end gtx670m and 680m sure they're not a gtx690 but they still are very nice graphics cards just because they're made for laptops doesn't mean they aren't high end. Mine at home is the 21.5 stock one, but with 8GB of RAM. However, at school, there are 3 editing systems all in one suite. They are the 27.5 with the i7, 16GB of RAM, and each have a second cinema display screen. The only speed difference i can tell between mine and theirs is start up time in FCP, and speed between changing when multiple programs are up. I havent used the maxed out one a ton, but its not really noticably faster (other than what i mentioned), especially if you arent doing heavy editing. But like i said, ive only used it a handful of times.
I have a 27" i7 I bought refurb from apple for like 1500. I put 8 more gigs of ram in it and it's speedy as fuck now. You might wanna check out the refurbs.
I do have one, and it's fucking awesome. I had no dead pixels, and it's sharp and large. I hate all other screens now, I just don't have the space I do on this one haha. It got to me on a monday when I bought it on a friday, from s.korea. epic.
You could also look into a "hackintosh". Basically a PC that runs the Mac OS. This way you get the best of both worlds. Cheap PC and the stability of a Mac.
Google it.
