Looking for a quick fix for my edge. I can bang it back in with a hammer but after a few runs through the park its hanging out like this again. Anything temporary will work since im just looking to get through the rest of the season before I have to spend the money on a new pair.
I would most definatley not cut the edge off. I'd far rather see you go to a hobby store and buy some 10 minute, 2 part epoxy, any brand will really do. Doesn't have to be 'marine' specific or anything like that. Before you use any epoxy I'd take a piece of clear packing tape or 2" masking tape and run it so it overlaps the base material running a little longer then the length of the gap, then cut it flush with a razor blade. Now take an air gun if you have an air compressor and GENTLY blow the gap out, and blow the edge teeth clean. Don't go ape here or you could delam some of the ski's layers if your forcing a lot of air in there. Then your going to want to mix up some epoxy, probably 1/4 of a little medicine cup. Then take something thin, an old credit card, popsicle stick, something along those lines to get some epoxy inside of the ski. Then spread some epoxy over those edge teeth and beat the edge back in place. Then I'd go and use whatever you can to clamp along the area where the edge pulled out. You don't need to go ham when clamping, like don't clamp that like a pipeline worker, rather clamp it nice and generously. To let the epoxy dry, get it so the ski is laying on its side with the edge repair facing downward somehow so that epoxy doesn't run onto the base (even though the tape is there to protect it from that) and topsheet. Then let it cure for at least 12 hours before you ride it.
Hopefully that all makes sense, and if it doesn't feel free to hit me up with a reply. Good luck with her man!
Dayumnnnn. Too late. Aha it will work like that anyways, but whenever you can keep the edge. I've seen loads of edges jammed back into a ski. Hope it all works out!
thanks for the advice man I cut the edge out a few hours ago though. I was planning on buying new park skis next year anyway so im not too worried about it holding up for an extended period of time. As long as they make it through about another month ill be happy. Got a solid three years of abuse out of those skis so im happy.
I think that you know what you are talking about, but did you really mean any epoxy will do? I used some JB Weld epoxy on my skis for the same exact problem and it made it worse. the epoxy just shattered. I thought you had to have an epoxy that has more of a "pliable" quality, then rather a "rigid" quality
Aha woops. Yeah I should have made myself a little more clear on that. Any 2 part clear hobby epoxy will usually work. Doesn't have to be marine specific. None of the guys over on ski builders have ever been hung up on that and I've never had issues with a non-marine specific epoxy. Most people I know and hear of stick to West System's G-Flex. Definatley has to be somewhat pliable. JB weld is a totally different beast when it comes to that.
Generally, once an edge is bent out like that, its never going to bond well again, even if you clean it off and reset it perfectly. Often, the gap where the edge fits in is already way damaged by the edge pulling out that its hopeless. Zipping the edge off with a dremel and filling the void as best as possible with marine epoxy is the best call - check out that stuff called G-flex, those and some clamps can do wonders. Make sure the new end of the edge isnt pulling out, squirt some of that epoxy into any separations you see and clamp the hell out of them if you ever see it start to go.
