Glass or Support Equipment

I was wondering which to go for. The Canon 17-40 f/4L or a Glidecam HD2000 and Manfrotto QR Plate and Manfrotto 701HDV head with 755XB legs. I have been more into photography lately, but I want to restart my video "career"

I have semi-decent glass on my 7D. After the insurance and B+W filter on the lens, both setups will end up costing the same

It depends what glass you already have, but if i were you I'd go for the support package, it seems like it would be more productive in the long run if you already have decent lens setup.

How come you want the 17-40 on a crop sensor? Not trying to come off ass an ass, just wondering.

If in the future, I upgrade to a full frame camera, I won't have to worry about rebuying glass. I am not looking for a super wide angle lens, and on a crop sensor, it becomes a good walk around lens. It's a good value too. Feel free to recommend alternatives if you want to.

755XB legs are so shitty. had them for a season and a half and absolutely hated them. twist release is the worst possible way to go.

also if you are doing any long lens work then a 701 will be pretty flimzy. a 502hd head isnt even that expensive, like 160 bucks and its much better and will last you much longer.

That's another possibility. Any legs you recommend? I would like to keep the whole setup under $400. Also, do you know if the 502 plate fits the 577 QR mount?

yes it does fit the mounts. i have the same qr mount on my glidecam and it all works together. something like this kit would be sick http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/506146-REG/Manfrotto_055XB_Tripod_System_with.html

Tokina 11-16, Canon 28-135, Canon 50 1.8. Nothing great, but it works well enough.

I'd definitely get the glidecam. But why get the 17-40 f4 when you can get a 17-50 2.8 for 1/3 the price (or less)?

I tried it. Out of all the lenses I tried, the 17-40 was the sharpest. Aside from the aperture, it's better than my tokina and better then the Tamron IMO.

Meh I'd rather have the 2.8 aperture and cheapness. But for photos or upgrading to full frame later is another thing.
