"This is a guy named Gurimu Narita. Apparently he's a trampoline athlete who's only been skiing for a few months. His run in practice was both way pipe dubs, left 9 and right 9. Going huge! With a couple more months of skiing under his belt, who knows."

120 days is a huge amount of time, if you were very commuted you could be doing doubles way quicker, then just take it to the pipe, I'm not saying its easy thats for sure.

i saw this guy at Grand Prix in Copper. While I think it's pretty interesting to see, and something that will probably become more common with the Olympics, I don't think guys like this will really ever be very successful, and that, for me, restores a little faith in freeskiing in the olympic era.
This guys was just HUCKING himself, with penciled out gymnastics/aerials style, no attempt even at grabs. Even though he was starting to go a bit bigger, and get more tech tricks, his scores were still super low.

this just goes to show what the Olympics will bring to skiing, whether it's good or bad. Also, did anyone else notice that while in the air... no problem, but actually using his edges and transitioning from wall to wall the dude had tons of trouble?

i'm gonna say the same thing i did about this last time it was posted, which is that i'm all for new talent in the sport and the guy is sick, but he really should touch up some of the fundamentals a bit more before he blows out a knee.

It's widely accepted that to become an expert at any discipline at least 10 000 hours of proper practice is required. And both way dubs in a pipe is expert level performance. Even at 10 hours a day, every day, for 120 days straight, you wouldn't get close to enough time to master something.

120 days ins't a huge amount of time given the task at hand.. This is also barring serious injury from practicing such high risk maneuvers at a beginner level, which is a very real possibility.

Don't say guys like this never will have sucsess, Olympics might bring something like extreme triathlon (winter/ summer version) they alredy hav cross- country skiing combined with shooting, and cross-country skiing combined with regular skijump.....

this idea got me so stoked

rip a mogul field, pick up a rifle at the end, go shooting through some shit, use all your ammo, toss a grenade to signify you're finished, drop into the pipe, then keep it going into the slope course.

The guys been skiing for less than 6 months of course he doesn't have style yet .. Your a fucking spastic watch the guy wake board and wake surf . He had style it will just take time to come out. You are dumb if your not blown away by this guys straight up balls to the wall talent ..

Did you see that Shaun guy at the X-games this year? Went bigger than everyone, but got the infamous boot-grab every hit, and had less style than everyone out there. Still walked away with the gold around the neck. Obviously no one is happy about that, but you can't really say people like this will never be successful.

Chinese are also doing it in skiing aerials. That avenue I understand, since the skiing element is pretty damn minimal.


The pipe scene will definitely get more and more 'specialists' training akin to aerialists, gymnasts, etc, but it'll be tough for simple technicality to crack that nut.

rode up the lift with this kid at copper, seemed really nice and super stoked on skiing.  Saw him up there shredding pipe damn near every day.  He has my respect.  Probably better at pipe than most of the people commenting in this thread....  Just saying

It'll be cool to see what he gets up to the next year or two, hopefully he sticks around.
Without a background in the sport and the really tech tricks, or grabs or switch tricks, I don't think we'll see him taking home any medals though.

I think he had like 2 days of skiing under his belt when he attended the northface pipe open, and he did a double there. Imagine this guy in the x games in a few years, attending slopestyle and pipe in both skiing and snowboarding.

You really are a jackass. It's not widely accepted that it takes 10 k hours to become an expert at anything. That's something that's only accepted among the idiots who read "Outliers" but didn't quite grasp what they were reading.

Welcome to the Olympics. Prepare to have the top ten infiltrated by people who only care about flipping and spinning to get gold and not about skiing itself... just like every other Olympic sport that requires insane air awareness.

The 10 000 hours insight long precedes Outliers, and has much more empirical evidence supporting it than Gladwell provides. Of course you would only be familiar with his popularized version, being one the idiots who read the book and didn't quite grasp it.

Grim is the man, such a nice kid. He used to come into Woodward all the time. He's got a dub 12 too, and last I talked to him he had started working on an unnatural one. Give him time on the style, I have no doubt it'll come with time.

it is not widely accepted. you read something that made sense to you, then stopped doing any research or thinking for yourself. if you read mein kamf im sure you would think it was widely accepted that Undesirables caused the economic collapse.

Point is, corralation does not equal causation and there will always be people who break the mold. dont be so sure you are right about anything.

10000 hours is a relativly random number that seemed to fit for most people. freak talents are not most people.
