I love when the filming follows the vertical movement of the subject in action sports. I saw it in a T-Hall tramp edit a while back, it was sick. They also did this thing where they were filming from above and in the pre bounces to the trick were following hall up and down, but just as he did the trick it went out of sync so when he went up, it went down and it did a really nice zoom effect on the trick

am i missing something here? desena has put out so many banger edits but i thought this was a pretty normal ski edit, definitely a lot of smoother glidecam edits from other filmers these days. i got the impression it was just an average park day and he wasnt really trying too hard. wasnt much variety in the shots either. i feel like if somebody like moxley put out an edit like this everybody would be bitching about how there weren't more tripod shots or something, but since it's stept it's a different story

I'm sorry man, but have you been living under a rock? Do you not watch a ton of edits or something?

Nothing against desena, he's amazing with a glidecam and continues to push it to higher levels, but this edit was subpar to what he is capable of putting out. Slopy glides, questionable framing, etc. I and many others know he can produce better and as the title of the edit says, this was a "low key" edit he obviously didn't put a ton of effort into it which is fine, I can understand that, it happens. I get lazy as fuck when I'm filming all the time sometimes you just wanna go have fun and not worry about the filming as much.


So, to call this "absolutely amazing work" and "best filming ive seen in a very long time" means either 1. you don't watch very many ski edits (ie zacs past two edits hes put out have had some amazing cine in them) or 2. you're just insanely ignorant to what "absolutely amazing work" is and/or just really like stept. Or maybe its both, who knows.

For real, this edit is sick, skiing was sick noah is so tight. The filming was good but for desena, I know he could do better and so I will end this post by saying the things I said had nothing to do with desena and were fully aimed towards the OP for making a very interesting opinion.

yeah this was definetely not even close to his best work, but man I love what he does with his colors, he grades so well, and it looked so much like the shots of noah on the jumps were in slow mo but im pretty sure they weren't, kids awesome.

The filming wasn't very good, except for the beginning, which I really liked, but he made a great edit out of the footage he had. It just flowed very well I think.

completely agree, skiing was meh, i liked how he really has nice sun light in the shots if that makes sense, glidecamming was pretty good, dont get me wrong it was a tight edit, just not the best by any means

The best part is that I really haven't been interested or impressed by any of stept's filming really... This is the first one that has really kind of taken me off guard, I thought it was fucking brilliant. I'm for sure watching out for him

And to all those wondering, even though I haven't really watched a ski edit the whole way through without skimming in like 2 years (other than TC), I think I scrubbed through DTF's last few major ones this winter and like... well, yea I get that he was trying some long lens stuff and different framing... but it just seemed like the same old shit in my books to be completely honest with you. Whatever. Hate me.

So stoked on this one though, can't wait to see more from this guy. I'm glad at least a few people in this thread are seeing what I'm seeing.

But what's brilliant about it? It's all just follows either behind, in front of, or to the side of the skier. nothing you can't see in a ton of other edits.


frankly i think the editing is what made this work more than anything and makes it stand out from a lot of recent edits. something tells me if it had all been slow motion you wouldn't be saying the same things.

Also I HATE 1.75 ratio or whatever the "Cine" scene dimesions are.

It's just not practical for skiing and action sports in general because of the nature and direction of actions that skiers exhibit. When you film with that piece of shit little slit that is "Cine", you are loosing so much important information in the frame about the skiers orientation in space, giving the action and movements in the frame so much less magnitude and forceful qualities that makes skiing so interesting and pleasing to the eyes. And sure, if you're zac moxely and like to film skiers zoomed out at 11mm a mile away, you are capturing the entire fucking jump or feature and giving the audience a very clear and strong indication of space and volume, but it's BORING because you loose all of the detail and have to squint to see the skier because he's a pin-sized little shit in your frame for the entire duration of the trick. Imagine if could shift focal lengths throughout the duration of the trick! You could relate space and enhance the skiers actions in so many more ways than you could with static focal lengths. Oh wait, that's called using a paddle zoom... It's not like I expected good filming in skiing anyways while NS filming overlords "Zmox" and Eheath has got everyone ejaculating over camera set ups with horribly rigid un-zoomable focal lengths (tokina 11-17 and t2i).

Like I really want to know what the fuck you guys were thinking? I mean, how do you expect to capture the volume and dynamics of vertical actions with a squished little pathetic frame! It's not possible. I'm really disappointed in a lot of people that switched over last year. It's lame as fuck, and I can't think of a good reason to use it with skiing other than "Oh well I saw someone else do it on vimeo and it looked cool so I tried it and it also looks cool".

Also no audio bugs the shit out of me. You NEED audio if you want to make a good edit, that's half the sensory stimulation we get out of skiing, the sound of them stomping every trick.

I really don't know where your guys heads are at. Then again, I don't really know where mine is as of late. OBVIOUSLY I need to "get out from under my rock" and go on NS more and watch more skiing, because then I would totally see why everything I ever write about filming is just stupid and not valid... I can already see your responses. Fucking pricks.

You seem very angry right now, put it in first bud.

People have switched to setups that don't have paddle zooms because they're cheaper and produce higher quality, not because me or zac tell them to (again, you seem to have a pretty ignorant opinion here). I miss my paddle zoom :(

Kids like to follow cam, yeah sometimes they're too far away, but also not having the entire skier in the shot isn't exactly ideal either (having say just the boots/skis is different, when you actually choose to zoom in tight its different, but when you just chop a head off it doesn't look good at all) I'm sorry you have this insane hate for the way these new kids are filming, maybe make something different to inspire them? Im not sure what else you're expecting

I love audio too, I can't handle seeing someone hit a rail and not hearing it, or someone stomp and landing and there i just nothing. Audio adds another dimension to video, its awesome.

As for the 2.35 crop I've used it a couple times, its just a new challenge. I don't like it much for glidecam shots but I love it with a tripod. Watch my edit "Morning at PC" and if you absolutely hate the 2.35 crop then thats fine I just want you to watch a video where I shot for the 2.35 crop and didn't just throw a wide screen matte on top of an edit I made.

Well yea it's true that part of the reasons is because DSLRs have really great value. But once you invest in decent glass, a glidecam, etc, you are looking at the price of an hmc40 or hvx, both great cameras... that only applies to people that are strictly filming, which is rarely the case with kids here because they want to be able to take photos too so you're right.

I've got plenty of really, really sick ideas lined up for filming skiing... Hell, at the start of the season I got asked to film with one of my favorite riders and I was totally looking forward to it but he got hurt. And my camera is broken, and I don't have the money to buy a new one and I won't for some time because I've been saving for an Intuos 4 tablet. Also I go to college nowhere near skiing, so when I went home for winter break I was focused on just skiing for the sake of having fun, because dedicating days to filming can really suck if things don't go well and I didn't want to waste what little time I had.

But yea I need to swear less? Idk maybe I'm an angry person idgaf

I've hated on cine style too. I think it works for some pieces but MOST edits should just be 16:9. I've repeated that many times on here.

Also, welcome to the last year and a half. soooo many fucking people are starting to use audio. i started including audio in my edits 3 years ago. heath and moxley do the same.

so yeah, glad you're finally coming out from under the rock bud.

I think your being a little harsh. Some videos look great IMO with the crop, and everyone wants to try it at least once. Have you seen desena's other stuff? The crop fits perfectly. I agree, there are very many edits that shouldn't be using it, but it really doesnt "kill" an edit for me.

? no i meant I sounded stupid. I didn't mean I hate cinescope THAT much, I've used it myself and plan to use it in my 2012 reel. It just needs the right content. But if I'm being honest, Stept has been one of the worst offenders in cutting off heads because of cinescope. They've gotten a lot better lately though, but in the past it was pretty noticeable. The 16:9 in this edit was pretty refreshing.

I meant to quote your post above. I see what your saying, and i think we are arguing the same point. But many members on here (not really you) think the crop is the end of the world. To the whole framing thing, why does everyone care if XYZ body parts are cut out? There are many times where i have intentially composed my shot so certain things are cut off, and everyone responds "watch your framing". I mean come on, sometimes it makes a shot a little different.

There's nothing wrong with only framing part of the skier, but in my opinion if you want to focus on the boots/skis, don't include any part of the rider above the waist. any higher and the framing just gets so awkward looking. and i see way too many videos (not the one in this thread) that cut the riders off at the stomach, chest, or even neck, which looks terrible.

Damn dude, take that dick out of your ass, you are coming off really agressive.

Most people enjoy my style of filming, I think you're the only one that has completely raged at it. Have you ever tried to do long lens Glidecams? They're frustrating as fuck with a telephoto, definitely why there is not many of them with the exception of Heath, Will and a couple other dudes. Sure most of my filming is the same and I have tried to change some things up, but look at other filmers, eheath has his style, stept has their style, etc.

If I had the choice I would love paddle zoom, that shit is so fun, its just not worth it for the quality that the cameras that have it produce, the HVX sucks the big one in low light, I dont even like the day light image it produces.

I have been trying to integrate audio in the past couple of my edits, sure its not awesome but im getting there, I will probably have a day this season where I strictly go out and record audio.

Sorry if you feel this way about my work, just no need to come off as a complete cock gobbler.

dang, some serious talk here, funny when people get AGRO about filming arguments.

I happen to enjoy followcams so much easier to get around, make turns, get more shots, have fun. But also, I feel there is so much glidecam at times in park edits, really stoked to see a mix of long lens and glidecam stuff. Those edits get me pumped.
