I don't know anything about avalanches but ... how bad of an avalanche was that? What would the consequence likely been? It didn't look terrible compared to others I've seen, but like I said I really know nothing about them.

Looks like a loose snow avalanche. Probably a size one. Pretty much just a shit ton of sluff. Either way it could still bury the guy and it was still sick as fuck.
