Wrist Injuries

About a month and a half ago when I was skiing park a hit a small rainbow switch, I caught my edge at apex of the rainbow and fell back onto very icey and hard snow. I thought I just sprained it and wore a brace for a couple weeks.
In the middle of last week it was still a bit sore and weaker than before. I went to sports medicine to see if there was anything I could do to strengthen it. While I was there they got an X-Ray. It turns out had broken my scaphoid (small bone close to the base of your thumb). I have to get surgery this Wednesday. After that I will be in a full arm cast for about thee weeks, then a cast that goes to my elbow for possibly up to two months. This will probably be the end of my ski season as I don't want to fall and re-injure it.
I had two ski trip to Montana and Colorado planned so I am kinda bummed. This seems like a small injury to end a ski season.
Any experiences with similar injuries?

just stick to groomers. Keep the risk factor near 0 and you could have a few good days.

I wouldn't ski in a full arm cast but maybe once you have the smaller one you can go easy.

gus kenworthy has an edit where he's going pretty hard in the park with a broken arm. can't find it right now though

I am hopeing to be able cruise some groomers once I get the shorter cast. As much as I want to say fuck it and huck it while I have the cast, I want to try and be smart about it so I won't have future problems.

As much as we all want to say "fuck it" and ski through injuries, I wouldn't with a broken scaphoid.

I broke my wrist pretty bad about 3 years ago (my right hand was perpendicular with the rest of my arm), and I was supposed to have nerve damage, majorly reduced range of motion, etc... But I stayed positive and did what I had to to recover. If you don't drink, eat healthy, and stay off the t3's as much as you can, you'll be surprised how quickly it will heal. I was out of a cast a few weeks early and I almost have full range of motion back.

It's all about your attitude.

I broke my wrist a couple years ago in march and kept skiing with a cast on till june. I just took it easy and made sure not to fall.

I suppose it's a judgement call. Sucks that you broke your wrist, but if you take it easy you should be okay.

Not the wrist, but my knee. It isnt broken or something like that it just hurt. If i take a hard landing on a jump or just fall i little backwards on a rail, it starts to hurt like hell. Anyone have any methods to keep away knee injuries or something like that?

I broke that exact bone, but my break was not bad enough to require surgery. i had a cast for about a month and made it back for PC's opening day. Post break the only difference I have noticed is that rarely ill get a pole plant that hurts my wrist. As for skiing with the small cast. I would say dont. It may be shitty watching your friends good ski, but if you crash again, you could end up breaking your arm because of the leverage the cast puts on it.

Im in a cast for about 5 weeks now... I've been skiing 12 times now and i am removing it in 2 days.

i actually fractured 2 bones in my wrist today and i get my cast on tomorrow. i am still going to try and ski a little with my cast because i dont wanna ruin the rest of the season

I would recommend you stop skiing and see someone asap.
if you messed something up you will want to find out now rather than later.

Broke the same bone years ago. I learned switch 7's with the full arm cast on. It went from the tip of my thumb, up to my armpit! But it probably wasn't the smartest idea.

Everybody in the park should be wearing wrist braces anyway, they are something so small that goes right under your gloves that you never even notice and no one knows you are wearing them. I got some from allsportprotection for like 15 dollars and they have already saved me from some would be sprains. Dealing with a bit of uncomforatable shit on your hands is better than a season ending cast.

Thanks for the support, I have mountain bike race season to look forward to so I will be spending a lot of time on a trainer bike.

I just found out a friend if mine snapped his humerus, and another friends mom broke her tibia and can't walk for 6 months, so I feel like kind of a bitch for complaining.

i have a broken thumb right now and im still skiing ur injury is a 6 week recovery i know a guy who did the same thing.
