They are insanely fast. You can get up to 40 mph on flat ground, you would be amazed how fast your legs can get you going. Super light road bikes are sick
I want a roadbike so badly but they are so expensive. Friend has not a race spec bike, but its all carbon fiber and so light. You can go insanely fast on it.
Yep. My brother is like super triathalon dude and spends ungodly amounts of money on bikes. He even wears one of those helmets with the long point that goes down his neck like a chode.
So expensive. My dad got into biking a few years ago and splurged on a few super lights. They were like around 3k each or more. Definitely worth it when you are going Mach 2 on a path though. So much fun
Worked as a mechanic at a local bike shop around here selling 15k$ pinarellos full campy gruppo. Also a bunch of Colnago.. These things were pretty fast!
Ive raced my fair share of Trek Madones, Colnagos, Cannondale superX's, and cerveloP3 and R5's. Going from team to team over the past 8 years racing pro has given me lots of beautiful bikes.
I got to ride my uncle's carbon friber frame rode bike when I visited him in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was my first time on anything other than a mountain bike and it was sooooo much fun! Got up to 50 mph going down the mountain, and going up isn't nearly as hard when the bike weighs so little.
my dad rides for a factory Orbea team so he has a very fair amount invested in a few road bikes and a TT bike...so fucking scary getting in to his tri-bars when you're not used to that position. haha
I've got a couple of friends (husband/wife couple) that do a lot of Iron Man comps. They're both suuuuuper in to biking, running, etc. I hopped on one of their bikes one time and was blown away. I never thought a bike could really be worth $5,000+....until I rode one. Holy. Fucking. Shit.
my store sells skis and bikes, been working the winter bike sale the last few days, and been awesome to talk bikes again. last year we put a few full sworks setups through, one pushing 11 gs, fucking wild ride, essentially this fella:
i'll stick to my decked out allez for myself, at least for the next few years, but who can't appreciate that shit?
honestly, its pretty fucking great. all of the techs at my shop whine about it non-stop because they're luddites who've been working on mechanical derailleurs for the last 15 years, but it just works really, really well. the thing fucking adjusts itself on the fly if you bend your hanger and throw it out of whack.
You could seriously buy a brand new 1098 for what these bikes go for. Not saying it isn't worth it to someone whose life revolves around it, but goddam. It's hard to wrap my mind around that figure- and still have to pedal to get anywhere haha
And I'm guessing that half of those bikes sit in the guy's basement 6 days a week. Maybe not, but it seems like people that buy bikes that are that expensive don't even ride.
As a bike mechanic I see this all the time. At least where I live, road bikes are the new status symbol for the doctors and lawyers. They'll buy a 13 grand Project 1 with a full duraace grupo, and ride it maybe once a year.
Some of these guys don't even know how to inflate their tires...
Our shop built a Cannondale Supersix evo last spring, and the dude put tubular rims and full SRAM red on it. It weighs under twelve pounds including pedals, computer, and two bottle cages. The bike is so stiff and so light that it bucks hard every time you hit a bump. I think it would be terrifying to ride it down a mountain pass. Also here's another vote for di2 shifting, once you set it up it just works and you never have to touch it again.
my bike is all carbon but its also got a flip flop hub so my top speed is about 30 mph. Ive ridden a madone, that shit is amazing. wish i had the dollar to get into racing, that'd be sick.
