Looking for a nice watch

something that goes well with a suit. i've never been a watch person and i don't even know what brands i should be looking for, so any help would be much appreciated.

ideally in the $300-500 range. nothing too cluttered or busy looking, nothing huge and bulky. i'm not a thick guy. though i do like the chronograph style..

All right here we go:

A watch I would advise is the Poljot International Chronograph with Poljot 3133 movement.  Also sometimes called "Strela" and some other name. A lot of version exit.

The original Russian movement is similar in functionality to the Swiss Valjoux 7734, but with higher number of jewels 23 vs 17 and lever movement operating at 21,600 bph vs 18,000 bph.

Poljot 3133 were taken into space by cosmonauts from Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine.

These things are a lot more unique then your average brand, and priced way below their Swiss counterparts. Around 400-900 online, really depends on the retailer.

And for a chronograph they often have a very uncluttered face:

yeah im no rich kid. i just want something nice that i can wear on occasion. automatic, quartz, i dont really care. im just not sure where to even begin. there's so many different styles. ive been liking the looks of black on black and black on silver.

something like this. not too busy, not huge and bulky. and i find it looks pretty slick.

The beauty of the best watches can often be found on the inside and the intricacy of the movements.
As a primary reason they were designed to keep time, then come the complications and then the looks.

Maybe not in the fashion brand territory, but those are pretty much all soulless quartz things anyway.

And the higher lever bhp makes the Poljot more lively, just a random little fact that sets it apart from the Swiss movement it was based on.

I have it and love it. I wear it daily (and have for 4 years) and its incredibly resistant to scratches and wear. I've never had a problem with it. Its a solid watch for a few hundred bucks

paying any more than $50 and a watch should be fucking flawless. i will never be able to understand why you'd want to drop hundreds of dollars for something that your phone does primarily anyways

In regards to watches in general, they're a functional piece of jewelry. The real question you should be asking is why people pay a ton of money for necklaces/rings and other jewelry.


Probably for the same reason people pay $200 for a Saga suit when they can get a 50 setup from Columbia.

Or why people buy a Mercedes when they can buy a honda. Why buy a $150 pair of oakleys when you can get a perfectly functional pair of lesser eyepieces.


Not to mention a watch is classy, and if you buy the right kind, it can serve you for a lifetime, and you can pass it down to your next of kin.

Oh and if you're not into paying a ton of money for a watch thats cool, but even a cheap Casio will be soooo much easier than pulling out your phone everytime.

it's both for style, something to complete a nice formal or semi-formal attire. and also for work. i work at a clinic where knowing the time is a huge part of my job, both because im constantly timing heart rates, doing 10-20s exercises, that kind of stuff. using a watch is far more efficient than pulling out a phone every second, and even then it's not practical. when im holding someones body and looking to see how long it takes before symptoms act up, having a watch right there in front of me helps a ton.

^ this is the reason why i want something not too cluttered and with a chrono. it'd be handy. plus, i like the style of something that looks a little simple and not over cluttered with markings and writing all over the place.

but thats the fun in style, right? people wear saga, jiberish, whatever brands they like because you get to show off something that represents who you are. though sometimes i dont agree with posers who just want to look the look, little things like watches, shoes, ties, stuff you can accessorize with im all for. plus, it's like having a little trophy for yourself. i could get a $20 watch that tells me the time, but that's not something i prize and want to take care of and save for years and years. that's all part of the fun of having something somewhat expensive! it's flashy, it stands out, it says something about you and what kind of person you are, and you really enjoy it and take care of it!

I like a lot of Nixon's nicer watches, but I'm very hesitant to shop with them since all 4 watches I've bought from them have been in the $150 range and none of them work any more. I'm sick of taking them to repair.

mmhmmm.

first i'd decide what type of band you want, color of face, etc. that'll help narrow it down and maybe we can help a bit more.

imo metal bands are for big rich italians and high schoolers. black and brown leather are classic and go w more styles of dress
