How cold is too cold?

What's the coldest day you've ever skied and is there a temperature that you say "fuck it" and go inside?

For myself -30C is the cut off (not sure what that is in Fahrenheit)

When I'm outside for about two minutes and moisture from my breath freezes to my beard.

Ya, -30 C is probably the cutoff for me too. That's without the windchill though. Sad thing is, temperatures like this aren't uncommon on the prairies.

-36C w/o windchill is probably the coldest I've skied in. That's probably the coldest I'd go in the future.

This.

I was skiing a couple of weeks ago at Granite Peak, WI. It was 0° at night with like 40mph wind gusts. My facemask was frozen to my face and we watched an umbrella get blown off a table and almost slam into a group of people. That's when we decided it was time to leave. That's the only time I've stopped skiing from coldness.

Coldest days were -12 F air temperature and about -30 F with windchill. Definitely a tid bit nibbly.

As far as cutoff temp, it all depends on how good the skiing is and how many layers I have at my disposal.

Yeah, and Asessippi shuts down after -40C w/ windchill I think. We tried to go one Sunday a few weekends go and had to close for that reason...

It really depends on the wind and humidity as well. I have had days where -12C felt colder than -20. But yeah, after a certain point the skiing is just not enjoyable. I'd say -25 to -30 depending on different factors.

coldest I've been out was around -20f, with a windchill of 40f.


Cold at least you just keep moving and layer up and you'll be fine. Windchill is just brutal. No practical amount of layers will help in that type of cold.
