2013-2014 Atomic Boots

Dearest friends of NS,

Now that SIA and ISPO have come and gone, I thought it might be helpful to create a little thread highlighting some of the new boots for next year. It was a very busy year for us with lots of new mold investment in the freeski, all mountain, and touring worlds. Take a peek and let me know if you have any questions about these or any of our boots. I'm stoked to hear what you think.

The all new Overload Series:

Developed over the last 2 years in close cooperation with our athletes, the all new Overload series features a entirely new medium fit (101mm) with a really narrow heel, Carbon High Back cuff, adjustable flex (+/- 10 flex points), adjustable forward lean (13°, 15°, 17° options), full length/width rubber boot board, one of the lowest stand heights on the market, and with replaceable dual-hardness soles. 120, 100, 70 flex options available. Gus, Andreas, Elias, Keefer, and co have been slaying it on the 120 since September and it's awesome to see how stoked they are on it.

The all new Waymaker Carbon and Waymaker Tour Series:

Waymaker Carbon Series - Chris Benchetler was super instrumental in the evolution of this boot and it was really a pleasure to bring this boot to life with him. Featuring a Polyurethane main body with our race inspired Carbon Spine, this is finally a 130 walk mode boot that skis as powerfully as a fixed cuff boot. Medium fit (101mm) with a really narrow heel, new walk mechanism that locks the cuff to the shell, 35° of cuff range of motion, swappable norm grip pads (ships with DIN but our Touring norm grip pads can be put on for total binding compatibility), grip pads screw into metal inserts for maximum durability and power transfer, and a special full length/width boot board that provides maximum insulation from the cold. 130 and 110 flexes available.

Waymaker Tour Series - Essentially the lighter brother to the above boot, the Tour Series uses a Pebax main body with Carbon Spine, a 280 gram Intuition liner, same mechanism and cuff ROM, but ships out with Touring norm grip pads made with Skywalk Rubber and Dynafit specified tech inserts. 110, 100, and 90 flexes available.

In terms of stability and power, most of our Pipe athletes opt for our Redster race boot to get an ultra powerful set up. But, the Overload's new construction makes for a very stable and powerful boot. Check out Gus's 2nd place run at last week's Sochi World Cup with the new Overload 120. Pretty sick that a 2 buckle boot can give World Cup Super Pipe performance.

Alright thank you! I have tried on both the dalbello Il moro and the salomon spk recently (maybe not the perfect size, but to get the feel of it) and my heel is moving. I have full tilts now that work great with this, but I do get some shin bang and some pain from a "sixth toe syndrome". How is the overload`s fit compared to these three boots (especially the heel)?

And just a question; Why do you only have 2 buckles? To me it seems that the three buckle design is so much better for securing the heel/foot?

The fit of the Overload will definitely be more conducive to alleviating 6th toe pressure because of the Live Fit zone which is directly over the "problem spot" on the outside of the foot. It will expand as necessary or not depending on what your foot needs while at the same time not detracting from the performance of the boot at all. The heel of the last is super narrow and the moldale foam we use in the liner is quite firm, so that combination will equate to a solid heel fit for sure. In general, foot hold comes from last shape, liner construction, and being in the right size more so than the number of buckles on a boot. Buckles obviously contribute to fit, but you'll find that this boot will either fit nor not because of the last shape more than anything. But we made the buckles as large and as supportive as possible because they do serve an obvious purpose. And by reducing the buckle count to 2 we minimize any excess weight. The Overload 120 weighs in at barely over 2000 grams per half pair, which makes it one of the lightest boots in this category. Once you guys can try it on you'll see just how secure your foot is inside the boot and like Gus and the rest of our team are demonstrating, the boot performs to their super high expectations.

I'm just curious, is the live fit zone a really high density foam? I guess I'm wondering how it expands without the foot moving at the same time.

Thanks, looking forward to trying a pair next year.

The Live Fit zone is actually made of the same material as the shell, just in a much softer durometer. That means when we make the shell that a chemical bond is created between the shell and the Live Fit zone. No leaking, no separation. The connection area can even be stretched or ground if boot work needs to be done. Concerning movement of the foot, even in a normal boot the foot will always move inside the boot when skiing. What's cool about the Live Fit zone is that it will immediately adapt to the foot as it naturally moves. No loss of feel or power transmission, just constant and immediate fit while skiing.

By Fall / September, they should be 100% available. Some shops might have them a bit sooner, some a bit later, but Fall will be a sure thing.

I think it will be one of those things you just have to put on and see for yourself. I've always skied a 98mm boot, never anything wider. I have more toe room in the Overload than I have had previously, but I've never felt like I've lost any control, even when skiing my 193 Automatic. So, on paper, its 101mm width would never be something I would normally check out, and it will be roomy for people who have a super super narrow foot. But like other kids who currently own narrow boots have already mentioned, they were surprised by how well it held their foot. The overall totality of the construction will surprise you.

yup! tried em yesterday and really dig em so far. definitely a boot that needs footbeds to get the truly snug fit I like. I was worried about the more upright position they're at (even at the forward setting on the back, compared to the forwardness of full tilts which looked to be less) but it turned out skiing really well and balanced between forward and switch. I can see why gus and the others are really stoked on em. I also was surprised at how well the liner fit, as I usually hate non-intuition liners but was pretty stoked on this one. If all goes well using em the net few days I may just sell my full tilts and use these!

Sick, I'm glad you took them out for a bit and even changed the forward lead settings. If you are looking for more forward lean, add the gel spoiler to the back of the liner. It will get you to 17°, which is more traditional and similar to Original FTs. Try that the next time you take them out.

We spent a lot of time on the liner, really trying to dial in the different foam layers and their placement to get the best fit possible. I think it will surprise a lot of people, especially guys like you who are normally preferring Intuitions. Thanks for taking the time and writing a bit about your experience with them!

Yep, a few models of Live Fit (the actual series of 2 buckle boots) are available with a 32 shell. Pretty sure the USA brought some 120s and 90s in this year and will do 130s and 100s next year.

Just picked up the Carbon 130s today- last pair available in the shop and wrung them out all afternoon.

The combination of control and comfort are amazing. As a straight lift-served freeride boot these are superb; can't wait to take them somewhere more interesting.

We produced a very small batch for Spring sales, but most are being saved for Fall, so they will be hard to come by until then..

Didn't see this post before but I completely agree. I have always been a narrow last boot person and couldn't even notice the wider last on the overload at all, really surprised since other similar last boots like the spk fit so horribly.

Here is a quick little review of the new Waymaker Carbon 130 that underwent a 3-week long test in Alaska by the folks at Epic TV:

Will you be expanding the size range for next year? The Waymaker boots are labeled as 'unisex' on the website but the current sizing doesn't reflect that. And do these fit similar to the Hawx series? My Hawx 100W are the only boots I've found that properly lock my heel down.

There are woman's waymakers which should work for you size wise. The fit is r e hawx slightly 101 with lateral live fit compared to 100 on the hawx. They do fit wider in the toe box I think too. Certainly not a lot wider they sill took me some time to bed in. The waymakers are great go for a carbon version if you can

I tried on the waymaker 130 and it was awesome. Still tight enough to ski hard but comfortable enough to do patrol shifts for 10+ hours. Now to see if I can prodeal them.

Exactly. The last is 101mm at the forefoot and heavily based off of our medium lasted Hawx- same instep height & heel pocket but as Tom noted slightly wider up front.

The Carbon versions not only have a Carbon Spine, but also have swappable norm grip pads to switch between Alpine DIN and Touring norms.

It's quickly becoming a favorite of skiers who spend a lot of time in their boots, especially our athletes who spend hours at a time standing around waiting to film. You'll even see them on non-Atomic athletes, like Pollard, this year, which I think is pretty sweet.

just want to chime in and say I'm still using the overload boots as I've grown to love them. No toe or shin bang and my heel is constantly locked in place which I love. I love these boots!

I work with a guy in Thredbo who skis atomic, he said the world cup racers are skiing the old race boot (red and white one) with the new redsters graphic because they prefer that boot.

he even had 2 pairs, an old red and white pair he used when he was racing and the new redster when he was teaching, i assume this is true but can you confirm?

Only partly true. Some Atomic racers are simply used to skiing Race Tech for the past 7 years and are slowly switching over to Redster but these are also the racers who have had the poorest results. The majority of our racers are on Redster and are more successful with it, such as the reigning World Champs Marcel Hirscher and Mikaela Shiffrin. Marcel also won the World Cup Overall title in Redster, and Mikaela took the women's Slalom title with it too.

Not my intention to hijack your thread, but I'm fairly certain EP will be on full tilts now. He posted something to twitter about a month ago or so. Either way, the waymakers look like an incredibly overbuilt and engineered boot. If I wasn't so perfectly happy with my dalbello virus boots, I would give those a hard look.

Thanks man, glad you like their direction! EP has been on the boots since before his accident last year and will continue to be on them. We spoke to him recently and he is still really stoked on them. Things can change in the future for sure, but as of now he is planning on staying in them. They simply offer him a fit and level of mobility that he has never had before.

The new Overload in this thread shares nothing with the Live Fit series of boots- it is completely a re-engineered boot from the ground up. The older Overload was the same thing as Live Fit, just colored differently. The only thing old and new share is the name.

The new Overload has a slightly narrower fit, lower stand height (one of the lowest on the market), a new Carbon High Back cuff, a new buckle system, and the ability to independently change the forward lean and adjust the forward flex.

Right now the Tracker 130 and 110 occupy that spot. Tracker is a 98mm boot with Live Fit on the outside of the foot, just like Waymaker. And it also now uses the same ski/walk mechanism as Waymaker.

If you have a narrow foot and Waymaker Carbon is too wide and are looking for a walk mode boot, definitely give the Tracker 130 a look.

I'm looking for something with tech inserts too. My ideal boot would essentially be a Tracker 130 with tech inserts and DIN soles. Cochise is too high volume for me and the K2s are too young for me to trust.

Ah, gotcha. Well, I don't want to say anything about K2, but there is a reason why no brand has ever put tech inserts into a DIN sole- TUV does not allow it. TUV is the organization that certifies safety norms and the ISO 5355 (DIN) is very clear as to what is and what is not allowed. It is for this reason that companies have always had to make boots that conform to either ISO 5355 (DIN) or to ISO 9523 (Touring) and therefore why swappable norm grip pads have been the way to go if you want one boot to work in both systems.
