Personally I am always super stoked on this. Its actually my favorite skiing competition of the year. They also changed up the format and now the top 10 finalists all get an invite to the Sun Valley park shoot in april. Over the week level 1 will drop updates, and then will create a segment for the new movie. I think that this change in format is a great idea, and hopefully will help draw great talent and seperate the boys from the men.

I predict some entries from Hood Crew and Toy Soldiers, but I think the winner will be an unknown who really needs the exposure and $$$.

Anyone want to share some stoke? Predictions? Any idea who is putting out an entry?

I exagerated a little but the opportunity to film with a crew like them usually means the beginning of a more "decent" ski career(little bit of travel budget, etc.). Plus he slayed and I was too lazy to watch the am movies this year so he was unknown to me at least haha.

That is quite the statement...

Shay didn't break any rules...if he did, he wouldn't be a finalist, therefore it's perfectly fine for him to enter. He slays everything, and I'm stoked to see that he's a finalist (he's actually got a really good chance of winning the whole thing).

I really loved Brad Bulzan's edit too. Not as consistently good as some of the others, but a few things he did were better than anything I've seen in any of the other edits.

Shay's part was sick, but he was about 0/8 with his grabs in the backcountry. Also, Alex has more unknown cred. Just look at how shitty the production quality of his edit was. Imagine how much sicker his part would have been if he had filmed with Toy Soldiers the way Shay did.

I think there should be a rule where you cant enter if you have a full part in a movie that is sold for profit. Or at least you cant use all the same footage.

Yeah man...TSP profited so much off that movie that they're gonna make an even better one this year...oh, wait...

This is the only rule there needs to be: "-Only amateur athletes are considered eligible for the Superunknown contest and prizes. How do we define “am?” Basically if you’re receiving money as part of a contract beyond equipment and travel support, you are by definition a “pro” and no longer eligible. If you get free skis or someone bought you a plane ticket to get to a contest you’re still good to go in our book. We reserve the right to disqualify entrants if we feel the rules are being bent or broken."

No one in this day and age is "unknown"...it hasn't been that way since probably Brogan won...hell Sig used shots from JOSS in his entry when he won...who cares. As long as their not making money skiing, they deserve to be able to enter the contest.

Im actually happy he is in the finals. I think he should get his break.

However, I dont think its fair to use old shots. not only have many of us seen them before but they were sold for profit by TSP. - I know many other people do this, I just think it goes against the nature of the contest.

I see him as a guy that is above the superunknown calibur, in the same league as Dale or Mcchesney. Someone that level 1 and other clearly know about and they could pick him up if they wanted to.

i dont see where its unfair to use old shots... if the guy went out and got his shots working his ass off why couldnt he use them...

and what is the problem with selling a movie? you know that the said ''profit'' only pay up the costs of the production for pretty much every AM movie company right? its not hollywood, no one is making money and its one of the reasons why a lot of AMs stopped making movies this year. TSP and such are not on the same level as level1 and dont provide the same opportunities for a skier.

I agree with pretty much all your points. and I agree he is not breaking the rules.

I also think that by their definition, alot of "pros" by our definition and use of the term, would be considered AM s. For example I would guess that most of the 4bi9 crew doesnt get paid cash in thier sponsor deals, and therefore would qualify. But I think it would be very unfair for Ware or Dale to use their segments to win superunknown.

I also object to using old shots, especially so many and ones that were highly visible to the community.

In 2007 when Tom Wallisch won the contest, he was featured in 4bi9's film "Look it Up" and movie which was sold for profit...therefore arguably the best winner of Superunknown broke your purposed rule...

Cheedar already films with Level 1, so how can he and Shay be on the same level? That would also take out everyone who has filmed with Meatheads, 4bi9, TSP, and ESK, not to mention all the even smaller companies that sell their movies locally, and all the small European companies...that's a lot of people who aren't getting paid to ski that could use a shot like this...

You only see him on that level because Act Natural was so good...and he was part of the reason it was so good...so why shouldn't he be allowed to enter a contest where he can even further show off his talent and maybe have a budget so he can shoot in more awesome places (and maybe even eat every now and then).

Your guess is wrong...Dale has been getting paid by sponsors for years (well...at least supposed to be...sometimes they don't come through)...therefore, not AM, therefore not able to be in the contest. Pretty sure the rest of the 4bi9 crew gets some money from their sponsors and some from 4bi9 (not much, but some), otherwise they wouldn't be able to sustain without working. Shay isn't getting paid from Moment or TSP or any of his other sponsors, therefore AM, therefore able to be in the contest...it's pretty simple.

Ok , first thank you for the responses. Second, he clearly deserves it.

I guess I just wish the contest had more of an "Unknown" factor. I was really stoked that they picked someone last year who was way off the radar. I would prefer to see new talent and new shots in superunknown, rather then a collection re-edited shots from old AM films.

Their not making a movie this year...are they done for good (making full length films) who knows (they're still looking to put out edits and content...they just don't know about full length films right now). And I don't see it as a dick move, I'd say that everyone from TSP is stoked for Shay (and any one else on their crew who happens to be in the finals, that remains to be seen), it's not like Shay still can't film with them, Cheddar still films with 4bi9, LJ still films with meatheads, Wallisch films with 4bi9 and MSP.
