US High Speed Train. THIS WOULD BE AWESOME.

You could get from Miami to NYC in roughly 7-8 hours. And NYC to LA in like 15-16 hours. I hope to see this in my lifetime.

So maybe im entirely too optimistic. If it was there Id use it. Now ill just go to europe and fly ryanair and take the trains. usem-ifyougotem

I could see this being very practical for coastal cities as well as other cities just off the coast....can't really see this working cross country though. Would hit the airlines so hard would have such a major opposition. Flying would still be the prefered way of flying for most people...unless this train was really THAT fast that it wasn't a big deal

High speed intercontinental in Europe is a breeze.

For 50 Euro I can go to Amsterdam from Paris.

And that really is from the trainstation right in the middle of Amsterdam to a trainstation right in the middle of Paris.

No getting to and from an airport, no check-in, no boarding I just hop on the train with my my printed pass, all the luggage I can carry and then enjoy free WIFI and 3G all the time whilst I travel in comfort. I get a lunch and some refreshments and in three hours I'm in Paris.

When you take everything like check-in in account it's even faster then a plane.

it's definitely ideal in europe. I was amazed when I went from the center of london to the center of paris in a little under 3 hours. Completely different cultures, separated by water but connected by train.

What would be perfect in the US would be a train that runs boston - new york cit- washington DC - miami. Maybe stopping in like...Atlanta or some place.

But the problem is that the train would probably stop 5 times between Boston and New York, 6 more times before DC, and then 10 more times before Miami.

That's just how we do trains in the US for some reason. We don't do high speed or express.

For comparison's sake...in France you can go pretty much from the very north to the very south in 4 hours, stopping maybe 4 times tops/

Do you mean SR-99? Or do you mean that this train is going to run into the desert and then over the Tehachapi Grade and into Bakersfield? If you meant SR-99, that makes sense to me. Large population base in Fresno that would "benefit" from this train. Either way, this will never make it beyond the Central Valley and into the major metro areas proposed. Typical California bullshit.

SLC -> Vegas and LA -> Vegas would get some serious traffic. How tight would it be to hop on a train and be in vegas in under two hours? party for 24hrs then hop on the train back ha

There's already a group of private investors working on a LA  <-> Vegas HSR project.

That would definitely make money.

It is going to go along 99.

However, instead of bringing it over the Tejon Pass (5-corridor), they have it planned to go over Tehachipi and then take the 14-corridor into the LA basin. Makes no sense to me.

why would a flight be cheaper? I doubt a train ticket will cost $600 plus like 100 for a surfboard

because these aren't like city commuter trains. They're really closer to planes than anything.

I remember getting tickets before from london to paris on the Eurostar, it was something like $150 per ticket on the train vs. $170 per ticket on the plane.

Difference was that while the flight 1hr10min, the train was 2hr20. And the train goes from city center to city center, less hassle, etc etc.

Plus surfboards are a pain to fly with, and it's probably gonna get damaged in the process. At least with a train you could have it with you for more of the journey, and the luggage stowing is probably less intense.

I just wish there was a train from somewhere near me to the beach. Local trains everywhere would be sick. I envy the people in new york, who between some walking/skating/biking and some trains the can get to the beach and go surf.
