Tell me about Nelson, BC

I posted in regionals, but this forums gets more traffic.

I know the skiing is top-notch, but how about the town? Hows the job market? Specifically in restaurants. (I am a line/prep cook.) Also, how about housing? On average, about how much should I expect to pay for rent? I would want roommates so I could save money.

I have heard nothing but good things, so I am very curious.

Nelson is great. People over there are super nice. Rent is a little expensive, but there are no jobs.

This my first winter in Nelson. i currently go there for the Sroam program, and it's pretty sick.

I haven't got to experience Nelson night life to its full potential due to me not being 19 yet, but from the house parties that I've been to, and the few times I've snuck into the bars it's been pretty good. Spirit bar has some cool shows but can be expensive.

Theres a lot of restaurants you could get a job at, but retention is pretty high. I have a few friends that work at the restaurants, mainly finleys and some place on baker. They don't hate it, but getting a job in Nelson is rather hard so they tolerate it.

Now for rent, it really depends, I pay $500 a month, but live in residence. My friends pay $300 each for a 2 bedroom + loft between 4 people. Look into rosmont for some affordable living.

Overal, living in Nelson has been pretty awesome, and I'm super glad that I live here now, but i think Terrace BC might be my new home in a few years.

right on guys thanks for the input. it would be really awesome to have some form of income up there....i am 23 going on 24 in september,

is there a time of the year where there are more available jobs?

Locals tell me jobs are never available unless you create your own business. The best time to get a job would be early fall, when the ski centers are recruiting.

thats funny, i used to own my own business re-stringing tennis racquets. Made decent money and was actually featured on the front page of the business section of the Seattle Times newspaper. I have been thinking of starting it back up. Is there a good tennis community in Nelson? Like a tennis club or high school/college teams?

it's really easy to get all sorts of labour jobs in the summer in the kootenays. it might be worth looking for jobs in the spring and then come up here for the sumemr if you get a good one. Summer in the kootenays is fucking awesome, even if youre working full time.
