So I have cancer...

Found out about a month ago that i have stage 3 hodgkin lymphoma, now am stuck at home in nh for the semester (was in utah where they are getting dumped on this year) while I get treatment.

So far I have had only one treatment, but will have them every 2 weeks until July. Pretty bored living at home and wondering if anyone here has had cancer or something that has kept them shut in for a while. Any idea on how to prevent boredom? I have started to cook a lot and thinking about learning a language.

I can't go outside too much or ski and have to avoid crowds because I pretty much no longer have an immune system and therefore can get sick really easy. If I get sick they can't give me chemo until I get better which delays treatment.

any serious ideas that don't involve smoking/drinking would be greatly appreciated

Deffo learn an instrument or prehaps get yourself a raspberry pi http://www.raspberrypi.org/ and have a play around with it.

One of my sorority sisters went through lymphoma. Sort of the same deal with her. She had to leave school for nearly a year while she was on chemo.

But once she was better, we had a backyard camping night with over 20 tents and multiple kegs all hosted by her parents. One of the better parties I've ever been to and everyone was just so happy. The atmosphere of being with a good friend and really celebrating life... there is nothing like it.

Aside from all that, do the following. Learn french. Learn to play guitar. Keep learning how to cook. Learn how to solve a rubik's cube. Then, once you are better, move back to Utah and get a sled and a husky. I know some of those were said, but if you do all of the above you will acquire the name of the panty dropper. I don't know any single lady that could turn that down.

vibes man. As for the boredom, I'd keep up the cooking if you like it. It really depends on what interests you but try playing some video games or even making a really dope edit. Start some kind of photoshop project of some sort and just get really into it

Vibes, try to read all of the classics and learn something else like the stuff mentioned in this thread. I would recommend Kendama because its addicting, will give you something to do, and really improves your hand eye coordination.

I highly recommend the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R. R. Martin (they're the books that Game of Thrones is based on). Each one is over 800 pages and there's 5 of them out so far. They're super good, I've been reading them while I'm laid up with a leg injury and they've kept me sane

Another thing that's fun and keeps the mind and hands occupied is origami

Personally video games would have me bored in one week.  As a college student and an aspiring academic I would be reading the most recent and cutting edge publications in chemistry, physics and biology and try my hardest to learn as much as possible. Maybe enroll in online college courses.  The enlightenment that comes with learning about the workings of our world is unparalleled.

Sorry to read this, I hope you have a fast and comfortable recovery.
My recommendation would be to find something you're interested in or passionate about that you could research and read a lot about over the internet. Reading a lot of books would kill a lot of time and help you a lot in the future!

Found out my good friend's dad - a great man - passed away in his sleep this afternoon after an ~8 month long battle with lung cancer. Shitty. Hope it works out good for you OP

I don't mean to pry, but how did you go about finding out that you had? I hear about more young people getting it and wonder what symptoms drove you to the doctor in the first place.

I wish you the best and hope you get better rapidly. My aunt had cancer, you got this!

i have thought about what i would feel like if i got cancer...
the movie 50/50 sums it up well, besides the fact your are supposed to be alone as opposed to out and about.
i just think his confused look on cancer would be one i share, something more surreal than anything.

I think it's neat you're learning new things, but just keep a positive outlook on it, and i hope that the chemo can make it go into remission

i got a brain disease thats a lot like cancer where i cant do anything. i just sat home, chilled with my animals, and smoked bud all day. gets boring but whatevs its a chill lifestyle and youll get used to it. i did. xbox, weed, a dog and cats is a must. everything else is super helpful. find some good music, i got into reggae. guitar is great too, if your smoking a lot and listening to music, picking up a guitar just feels right. there are tons of great teachers online. i picked it up quick and am still learning. oh and dont get a kendama they are gay as fuck

I got really sick. I had a cough for a few months and didn't really think about it. Then it got really bad to the point I couldn't breathe at times and I had the worst night sweats. When I went to the doctor and they found a big lump on my neck which was remove in a biopsy which confirmed it.

I just recently made my return to skiing. I had a family member that was sick and I left Revelstoke for a month and a half. Cancer is such a super shitty thing and I can't say I know exactly what your going through, but I know it's awful. Vibes man. I'd just start to do things you've wanted to try but never had time. Keep your head up. Stay happy. Really sorry bro. Hope you have a quick cancer free recovery.

Right now, you should surround yourself with family and friends. When the essence of living is being drained by treatment, you realize how much you mean to others. Take it easy, sleep lots, drink a lot and maybe consider medical marijuana to help with appetite, sleep and quality of life.

To still be involved in skiing while being out of combat, try editing videos. Get your friends to gather footage, gather tunes and make a project.

That sucks I feel for you and kind of know what your going through. I'm going through chemo now to for embryno rhabdo sarcoma and I'm nearing the end of my treatment and all i can say is that if you are supposed to do physical therapy don't put it off even if its the last thing you want to do, I did and now I need to do a lot more than if i stayed caught up with it. but for the boredom I'm learning guitar and have played a lot of Zelda. Hang in there bro.

My dad went through cancer and was able to pull through. A friend of ours has cancer and needs a bone marrow transplant. My brother and I are taking the tests to see if we could be donors for her.

Vibes man, you got this in the bag already by seeing you are worried about being bored.

One of my closest friends had cancer twice in middle school and he and I were both avid guitar players. I would suggest trying guitar like other members suggested, however there is a chance that, depending on your treatment, your skin on your fingers will become extremely sensitive and make it tough to play. Just focus on staying healthy and making it through your treatment, So many vibes to you man.

Shit that sucks man, but i would defianetly say do something that will prove to be useful especially like you said learning a language. Also learning an instrument is really cool, i've recently taken up guitar and i love it hahaha. But yeah, basically anything like that or photo/video editing (i understand this might be hard if you can't go out and get shots though) or instruments, a new language, 3d modelling or anything you've thought about doing but not got round to hahah and vibes man hope everything works out.

Honestly threads like this make me love newschoolers. so many people just supporting another skier. Personally I would try and learn a language of a country I want to travel to. That way when you get better you can go spend some time in some badass country and actually experience some culture.
