Alright so my dad finally decided that he wants to get an upgrade on his skis after trying out my ON3P filthy riches. His birthday is coming up so I'm looking to get him a sweet pair of skis. He's not the best skiier in the world, but he can go down almost any trail. Usually my dad just shreds the groomers and if there's been some snow he'll venture into the woods. I really don't know much about "all mountain" skis but anyone wanna give me some insight into which skis you think he'd like?
I got my dad some K2 Photons for pretty cheap last year and he's in about the same boat as yours. Great groomer ski that can handle trees and a little pow
For directional all mountain, the two top sellers are probably the rossi 88 and the Volkl rtm 84. Both have rocker, but the Volkl is full elliptical rocker. My dad has the 84's and swears they are the best skis he's ever been on in his life. He loves them in the bumps and trees because they just pivot.
Working in a shop my biggest seller the last 2 years have been Blizzard skis and the Bushwacker kills it. It has a fairly forgiving flex but is plenty stout for high speed rippin, it has a great rocker profile, floats nicely and doesnt catch in the crud.
How stiff is the Typhoon? Is it likely to overwhelm someone who isn't skiing aggressively all the time? It's got a notably longer radius than the Filthy Rich.
Compared to a filthy, it's got a bit more beef and as a result, way better to take all over the place. No metal in it besides the edge, so it's not as stiff as some of the similar catergory skis with titanal and such.
So they could be forced into smaller turns of needed in trees/bumps/etc?
As seemingly the little brother of the Vicik which seems to be the little brother of the Wren, I was curious. They seem like something I could get way more use out of than my Billy Goats given recent snow conditions...
Definitely easier to throw around, but they do want to make Vicik-radius turns, not really a carving ski but sort of like a hard snow charger. I got my ass handed to me at Mary Jane in CO the other week on bumps, but I think I'd have done better on the 176cm length for that sorta stuff rather than the 186.
I'm really excited to get out on the Tychoon Tour's this spring and do some ascents, they're the sort of ski that should be f-ing stellar on the icey/suncupey/slushy snowfields.
My dad skis primarily groomers, but likes to venture off into some moderate "off piste" stuff once in a while when we're up north or out west. He bought some Volkl Mantras last year and loves them. He says they're super stable and blast through just about anything.
Description from Volkl:
The Mantra features a shape of 132_98_118, with a slight tip rocker. This combination, along with a full wood core and two sheets of titanal, creates the absolute finest combination of soft snow float and groomed snow performance, even when conditions become icy.
