Im in the market for a jacket for my winter next year in Rangely, CO. Since the Highs around this time of the year are around -5 degrees, I will be looking for something really warm, fashion is not an issue. Im looking to buy this time of the year because this is when everything goes on sale. +k for help thanks!
Check out some burton ak stuff I know they make some pretty thick down jackets and they have gore tex too so that's a plus. The north face probably makes something too
Orage Flux, Orage B-Dog. Anything insulated made by Orage with a 100g/80g rating will keep you warm in those temps. I've skied most of my days on hill this year with -20C to -25C temps plus wind in an Orage Flux and haven't been cold yet. Anyone saying 'Oh you can be so much warmer in a shell with proper layering' then arguing that insulated jackets are bulky and ride uncomfortably are spewing some mad B.S. Couldn't be happier ditching quite a few of my layers and my old shell for 1 insulated jacket, especially for the climate I live in. Haven't been over-heating on warmer days with it either.
Also repping an insulated Orage Nelson vest (yeah I'm a whore for their product now...) for urban/yard park riding, and we've skied many -35C days and nights, and that vest is enough to get me sweating out there. Shit's great!
I was stuck between the gonzo and the flux, but I just got the gonzo shell because I have a shitload of layers I could wear under it, and I wanted it for spring days. But the flux is really nice.
I gave up on super warm jackets because it's so hard to get layered exactly right every day. I bought an XL TREW shell and layer with extra cheap thermal layers based on the temp and I've been much happier. Plus, if it heats up that day you can strip a layer in 2 minutes and toss it in a pants pocket.
while a insulated jacket is good (espeially in that weather), layers are your friend. get a nice set of baselayers and some thermals and such (no cotton). those can even make a shell work in those temps
Was going to write something along the lines of this.
If you get your layers dialed, then it's much better to do tech shell and non-cotton layers. Much more versatility for temperature or activity fluctuations (like skiing hard vs. riding the lift, or skinning up versus transitioning slowly).
Yeah, I was to. Went with the flux because the bottom line is, is that where I live, it will never warm up enough to be nice to the point where you need to shed layers in a day. So I bought that vest to throw over hoodies for spring skiing.
