Skiing + wind

I'm going skiing tomorrow and the wind is going to be around 12-17 mph and I was wondering how much wind does there have to be so it's not enjoyable.

we have like 30 mph winds all day everyday at bachelor. Sustained winds of 50 mph makes the chair rides not tolerable and those arent to uncommon at some mountains in oregon. I know it howls pretty bad at ashland

In all of my years on newschoolers, this question is a first. Rule of thumb, when the wind rises, the riders stay down. That means avoid park and wind exposed areas. Otherwise, you should think of keeping warm and prevent exposed skin to freeze.

Ive skied in days you couldnt even drop in the runs because the wind is so strong.

Jay Peak sitting on the flyer lift, you look north and it's so flat you can see to the north pole. I've been sitting on that thing rocking back and forth in some gusty shit when it's in the single digits.

17 mph should be a breeze. no pun intended, but always take a step back and think about the consequences before you do something that might be a bad idea.

My general rule with wind: bring extra layers. Something that'll break the wind. And 12-17 isn't anything.

Ya bachelor can get pretty crazy ive been there where we had to bunker down in one of the ski patrol huts and the visibility was like 0. It sucked

at my hill chair rides and shit start getting sketchy at about 50km/h anything more than that and they usually close the lift. (dunno what that equates to in mph I'm Canadian eh)

you should stick to the formula, and it is as follows...


For every 5mph of wind, you need to add 2 tall tees.

If you have more than 6 tall tees, you can substitute 3 of them for 1 hoodie.



So for instance if it's 30 mph outside you can either have

A. 12 tall tees

B. 1 or 2 hoodies depending on the square root variable of the cotangent of that particular group of a defining proof.

C. Or Fuck it, wear a jacket.

do up your powder skirt on your jacket. it helps prevent wind blow up your coat and freeze your nipples.

17mph is a calm day here on mt hood though. you should be fine.

12-17? That's calm winds. As a general rule of thumb, I don't ski when it's going to be more than 50 mph gusts or 40 sustained. There's a risk of wind holds, its cold, the wind gets blown off the trails, and overall it's just shitty. But you should have no problem with that.

Mammoth regularly hits 100+ MPH at the summit. I've been there when they've closed all but 1 lift due to wind. 27 is nothing.

All depends on the mountain. Baker has a policy of closing lifts if gusts hit 50-60. I know Crystal has a policy of closing the mountain if a patroller holds up his finger and one side is colder than the other.

^Now that I think about it, its probably a little more, we got to about 80 last year when they closed the whole mountain. Cannon has gotten to 198 or something crazy 100 years ago or some shit...idk

 those wind speeds should be a concern at Heavenly we start closing lifts after 60mph depending on wind direction and chair swing 100mph plus gusts happen pretty often every year

one another downside about wind is that it will blow the snow away from landings and they become super hard and icy. however depends from which way its winding though.. nothing is more annoying than seeing the yesterday's powder be gone due to wind ._.

Wow I'm surprised at how conservative other mountains are or we are aggressive at sunday river. We don't shut down the chondola until we bumper fault, basically when the lift shuts its self down cause the chair is going so sideways it doesn't enter the terminal properly and comes really close to not being on the track.
