General Hunting Opinion

So the wolf hunt was a hotly debated topic in MN this year. I grew up in rural MN so I always thought hunting wasn't looked down upon but when I went to a discussion there seemed to be a lot of antihunting opposition. So I guess I just want to know from a large audience what the general opinion is of hunting.

But the thing is even after humans destroy the planet nature will take its course, its not a human responsibility to control populations, and whose to say what a normal population of animals is, its all subjective and I think

The difference is that humans are moral agents; we can recognize and make decisions and be aware of their effects on the happiness/lives/harm of others and because of this we have the responsibility, for better or worse, of making appropriate decisions.

other animals are aware of their surroundings and have cognitive functions, while i agree not on the same level but the human race soon will extinct itself and the earth will reset itself, i believe that the we are on such a small level and our existence is so insignificant compared to the universe and we're on such a small scale that things like this shouldn't matter, nature will take its course no matter what, and if we are selected to be extinct we will be, simple as that

the fact that we don't matter in the grand scheme of things is irrelevant. this is here and now. if anything, controlling populations is trying to even out what we've already fucked up and letting everything go to shit with the mentality it will all be cool when we're gone is stupid

i disagree, nature will run its course no matter what, if a species is selected for extinction then its going to be gone, its not humans job to control populations, why would it be, we're just animals like the rest

And we are the top of the food chain and therefore control the populations below us. Just like wolves, mtn lions, bears, etc control the populations of the lower animals in their populations by killing them and eating them.

i think you may be confusing controlling population with survival, wolves don't just kill things for fun or to make sure they're controlling populations, they hunt to survive, which is fine, if you're hunting to survive all the power to you, if not, its just mindless killing of animals

Dude. I don't even know where to start. This isn't even close to bring a valid point. Commercial fishing is nature running its course? Damns, deforestation, development, mother nature built those. Someone said it above but mankind is intelligent. We are disrupting these populations, at least we can be responsible. And hunting for survival? Every time you kill and butcher an animal you are ensuring your survival. You need food to live. I don't know what weed your smoking but I would sure love some.

Why, my neighbor Mr. Thomson had to stand with his shotgun at our bustop in the rutting season because of moose/ bears coming around all the time. We had traps set up by the MNR all around our place. Bears, wolfs, lynx, and some moose would wonder into town from time to time. It's just part of northern bush life.

yeah but nature serves a functional value (emotional and spiritual as well as industrial and material) and sure, 'nature' can run it's course, which yes, humans are included in nature (by some definitions, it is also useful to separate ourselves and creations from it when communicating certain ideas) but .... basically we don't want to die. we want to have a good time. which is cool. but we can do things to help that, and alter things that aren't 'natural' to our benefit

I hunt for many reasons: food, enjoyment of the outdoors, time with family and friends, the thrill of the chase, and getting away from work and school. But we still control populations through hunting.

I see nothing wrong ith hunting for food. Especially rabbit and kangaroo hunts in Australia. Kangaroos run rampant. I'm not knowledgable enough about wolf hunts to comment on that though.

I live in Salzburg - Austria, and hunting is a big part of our lives in the mountains. I grew up with hunting and I really enjoy it now. There is something about learning and getting to love so many things about animals, trees and nature alltogether, not even to mention the amazing quality of the meat and the memories you connect to it.

But I also understand that some people, who can't connect to hunting and never were confronted with it have a problem with it. But I always try to reason with them and try to explain why there can be such a passion in it.

Hunting in general benefits everyone, but the wolves and bear in northern Wisconsin are a problem, they need to make hunting wolves open for a longer period, and enough of this 8,9,10 point bullshit for bear tags, everyone should get a kill tag every 5 years

I came into this thread specifically hunting (pun intended) for your answer, and when I found it I was pleasantly surprised with the logic and sense behind it (not to attack you personally, just based off of you previous posts).

Yes, some hunters are assholes, and if you ask Disney, every hunter on the face of the earth is a sadistic asshole who wants nothing more than to torture small animals and buttfuck mother nature. That, however, couldn't be farther from the truth. Every hunter I've ever met or hunted with has been extremely ethical in their methods of take, with their primary concern being a clean, responsible, legal kill. This token group of drunken redneck fucks does exist somewhere, I'm sure, in a small minority, but they are just that: a minority.

Hunting helps to keep otherwise unchecked game populations in line so the animals don't end up overpopulating and dying in far less humane ways such as starvation and being hit with cars.

In regards to the wolf hunt in specific, it is my personal opinion that they should start allowing tags to be drawn in specific areas with strong wolf numbers for x amount of years. What has started happening in recent years in places like Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP is the wolf population flourishes without a hindrance as they have no natural predators save for man. Their growth has exceeded a healthy balance and they have become an unstoppable force that ravish game populations, such as elk. This, over time, will lead to a massive imbalance in the ecosystem that will result in a wolf population explosion to the point where they cannot be killed fast enough and they are endangering humans and their live stock (even more so than already).

If you're a responsible hunter/sportsman, then you already are folloing the law and most likely are taking game responsibly (not taking more than you need, shooting more drakes/bulls/bucks than their female counterparts) and already support conservation efforts such as Ducks Unlimited.  There is nothing wrong with hunting when done correctly, but its the poachers and irresponsible hunters that give it a bad name.

I'm okay with it. If anything, it is a hard thing to do it looks like. I went hiking with my class yesterday and saw some hunters in the parking lot. I was blown away by them lugging that bastard all the way back. They hiked in like a good 8 miles or so. No ATV or anything.

cant be bothered reading whole thread but i bet some vegetarian/vegan has bitched about how it wrong n all. I am a vegetarian, have been for around 6 years now. I have no problem with hunting aslong as the animal is being killed for a purpose, ie being eaten or the pelt being used. If you just killing for the sake of killing that a bit sad and pathetic

This is a completely absurd post for multiple reasons, but I'll just address the latter part:

I'm a liberal. My dad's a liberal. All of his friends from work (US Fish & Wildlife Service) are liberals. We all hunt. We all hunt every single year. I grew up eating pretty much no other protein but moose, caribou, halibut and salmon... that my family and friends killed... with rifles/shotguns (or fishing poles/nets).

I grew up hunting and fishing, and I fully support subsistence harvesting. It sickens me when people waste meat by leaving it in the field or not field dressing it properly, especially up here with species like caribou, moose, and king salmon.

This thread actually seems to be pretty good overall... I was pleasantly surprised to find that there aren't too many completely ignorant posts. :)
