General Hunting Opinion

So the wolf hunt was a hotly debated topic in MN this year. I grew up in rural MN so I always thought hunting wasn't looked down upon but when I went to a discussion there seemed to be a lot of antihunting opposition. So I guess I just want to know from a large audience what the general opinion is of hunting.

I grew up in a pro-hunting environment and have nothing against it. As long as the animal is utilized and is hunted in season with correct tags then there shouldn't be anything wrong with it. There are people whose jobs are to make sure that they limit the amount of tags given out each year so that animal populations remain in good condition.

Hunting is an awesome experience, like camping with a competitive aspect to it. Anyone who eats meat and also opposes hunting is hypocritical and ignorant. I would gladly live the life of a wild deer for a couple years and then be shot by a hunter, than live as a cow raised to be slaughtered. ..

responsible hunting to control populations is definitely a good thing, for the meat also imho as long as it doesn't put too much stress on the ecosystem and if it's done in a professional way ...

ie. one of my uncles is a gamekeeper responsible for one of the largest pieces of forrest land in belgium and he hunts around 100-150 large game animals (deer and bore, we don't really have anything bigger here) a year. At first i was like whoa, wtf that's a lot ! But if you get talking with the man and hear what exactly he does for the ecosystem, how he keeps count of populations, feeds the game during winter, etc. you really get a whole lot of respect for the way he manages the ecosystem.

I hereby agree with both people above me, I think wolf hunting in Idaho is also a good idea, of course I am from northern Idaho so that could influence some things....

If it's for population control and/or food, go for it. Otherwise, what's the point? Is it really fun to just shoot and kill an animal to leave it there?

People have been hunting literally forever so I don't really mind as long as it's done smartly and safely. I don't like people killing animals, I like animals, and don't see why they have to die because some dude wants to go "huntin" But god damn it, it's his right to do so, so who am I to judge or tell him no? If he is doing it legally and following the rules then right on!

I'm 110% for it as long as its done in a responsible and legal manner. Here in ohio we have a massive overpopulation of dear and i'd rather those animals die by the bullet than be hit by a truck on the highway.

Pretty sure real hunters don't leave their hunt there.... Those are dumbass fucks who don't buy a hunting license and just dick around with guns in the woods with their friends... Real hunters are responsible and eat the meat, population control, then mount on wall, etc.

While I was skiing up north this past weekend my dad got 15+ pheasants with a couple friends lol.

Being a hunter myself i agree with hunting as long as its done in an ethical manner. I try my best to make each kill as quick and as humanely as possible and respect the animal as a living being.

bottom line.


-if you use most or all of the animal in some way (selling the animal doesn't count unless the person you sell it to will use all or most of the animal)
-if you kill the animal humanely
-if you do it during the hunting season and with a hunting license

then you are fine as long as you said yes to the above three things.


i also support hunting if you are doing it as a means of population control.... however if you kill large amounts of an overly-abundant animal i would hope you would use part of the animal in some way.

I live in huntin country. Most people are pretty responsible. people are out patrolling to make sure people don't kill shit that's not in season. Would rather the deer get shot and eaten than hit by cars.

i used to hunt, i was raised in a hunting family and a lot of my friends hunt, I just dont see the need, or the fun in killing another animal, especially with a shotgun or high powered rifle. Nature is beautiful, animals are more beautiful than we are at most times. why ruin it even more than we already have?

It helps keep populations in check.

It is great for local economies and even keeps some towns alive

Compared to the slaughter houses that kill millions of animals it is very humane.

I was vegan and am vegetarian and while I can understand where people who are against hunting are coming from, to me it doesn't make nearly as much sense as what I think which issssss;

it's sooo much better for animals than factory farming. It can also help to preserve ecosystem health in areas with high human interference. There are people who definitely just like killing things, but whatever, those people were going to eat meat anyways, at least now they know what killing an animal is like and if they can face that, I respect it. The people I DONT respect is those who eat meat but could never watch an animal being killed because it's too sad/scary. Just willful ignorance and separation of action/belief there imo

last time i went hunting i shot rabbits out of the back of a pickup at night with a spot light. I think i drove over more bunnies than i shot though, those bastards were everywhere. Ive only shot varmint really. Its fun and easy. I shot a gator in florida which was pretty cool. I bet that fucker is still swimming with a 7.62x39 in his leg, in hindsight i wish i hadnt shot the gator but oh well.

i bet i get crucified for this post. Save your effort, shooting small animals just for the fun of it is awesome and im always gonna do it.

actually lots of their arguments use both reason and logic and make complete sense. It's pretty damn hard to find fault with the "1/10th of energy is carried through each trophic level, so 1/10th the land is used for the same energy that'd you'd get from growing plants over animals". I dare someone to find fault with that (although I can think of a couple minor ones).

That being said, I love hunting and think it's great in moderation. Hunting wolves like was first mentioned I completely disagree with (why do you think your deer populations are so high), but most game that can be eaten I'm 100% for.

also like Gato said, trophy hunting is retarded and completely wrong. especially when you hear stories like this: in New Brunswick a couple years ago some dude spotted a wolf. The first wolf that had been seen in the province in almost 100 years. So what does he do? grabs his gun and shoots it. That guy should get shot.

hunting is the most humane way to get meat and helps regulate animal populations without to resorting to wasteful culls. No one who uses commercial animal products should be offended by the practice of hunting.

However hunters can be huge assholes. I know most of them are just regular people and they have some compassion for animals, but there are a small amount (who also happen to be the most "obvious" hunters) who get all macho because they kill animals and make fun of vegetarians and stuff.

"don't hate the player, hate the game" doesn't apply here. no pun intended.

I cant kill living creatures that can suffer. But, I have nothing against people who hunt. Its an important skill to master to survive in case of the breakdown of society. I do enjoy game meat, but I am not the one who kills.

trophy hunting, like big/dangerous game is another issue. On one hand it does put lots of money into conservation which does help protect animals. On the other hand It's hard to respect the people who do it because they are pretty much only doing it for the thrill of killing and probably wont eat the meat unless it's a bovine.

Along with the hunting theme here, who said you had to grow animals? A deer has quite a bit of meat on it. You also mentioned the amount of land being used, for instance if someone had a 100,000 acre cattle farm than decided to switch to plants so he goes and sells 90,000 acres. I can almost guarantee you that those 90,000 acres would be striped down then developed into a neighborhood or something along those lines, and its obvious that a neighborhood has far worse of an environmental impact than a field of grass used for cow food.

To the last part - think about it like this; when McDonalds cuts down the rainforest to produce a product to sell to customers.. if the product was a plant they would need to cut down 10,000 instead of 100,000 acres of rainforest.

actually the entire thing is based on reason and logic, I'm not even vegan but there is literally no logically sound argument for eating animal products for anything less than survival that I've come across.

main arguments for eating meat are 1. people have always done it 2. other animals do it 3. we're capable of doing it so its 'natural'. none of those are valid and if you universalize the 3rd one it basically implies that we should devolve to the state of nature.

bunnies get the 12g and assorted pistols. Hitting a bunny thats running from the back of a moving car with a pistol is pretty awesome, its like mega skill shot. I carry a tomahawk when i do it too, ive still yet to scalp one though

I'm talking about in North America where most of our food comes from. In this area untouched land is for the most part unavailable. So for example; a farmer who has a plant farm uses 10,000 acres (farm A) but a cattle farmer uses 100,000 acres (farm B)to produce the same amount of energy. The 90,000 acres around "farm A" will be developed into a neighborhood because the farmer doesn't use it. Farm B cannot be developed because that land is used by the farmer therefore it remains a grass covered field for the cows to graze.

I support hunting. What the people in opposition have failed to realize/did not get taught by their marxist professors at Columbia is that in fact their precious wolves would die in greater numbers if not controlled by Hunters. They seem to lack the mental capacity to comprehend that Wolves have very few natural predators and therefore would suffer from overpopulation and eventually lack food resources due to the unchecked numbers of them eating all of their food sources.

that's true, but in actual effect both would happen. also farmers don't work to produce food for a certain amount of people; they work as much land as they can. so it is likely that they would produce food for 10 times the amount of people, and just use all of the land for vegetable production

I'm from Minnesota as well, and I think it's fine as long as you get a tag and all of that. They are bringing down the deer population, which has been creating problems for deer hunters

Is that really a good thing? We spend billions of dollars paying off farmers so they don't produce food (agricultural subsidies). If all the meat farms switched to vegetables the price of said vegetables would drop so much that the farmers couldn't support themselves, which in turn would lead to an economic collapse in the U.S. What i'm trying to get at here is there's a balance.

Always hunted, always will. Seeing that New Zealand is still largely an agricultural nation, with a desire to preserve our natural wildlife because of the threat of introduced species, hunting is generally accepted here. I, along with every other person I know that hunts, will never leave an animal there and will always eat what we kill. I believe it's all about consideration, moderation and respect though. The majority of hunting I do is on land that's owned by friends, and they will tell me what I can and can't shoot, depending on size and abundance. I do have to say that some hunters are complete fuckwits though, with the desire to kill anything they see that moves. Education is essential when it comes to hunting.
