Fire @ Night Club in Brazil

Don't know if this has been posted, but I checked. Fire broke out last night in a night club in Brazil. According to reports there was only one exit--the front door--and the bouncers were trying to keep people from leaving because they hadn't paid their tabs.

yeah I thought that was pretty messed up. I mean they obviously didn't realize the severity of the situation inside or something, but still-- it's really sad that many of the deaths could have been prevented if there was an exit available.

Also--when are bands going to stop using pyrotechnics on stage-- they've caused quite a few fires. I couldn't quite tell from the article but it sounds like the band thought they'd play with flares on stage or something? 

All this makes me think about is when I went to Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen last month, and it was SO packed-- probably 2-3000 people at least. You couldnt move, and the multiple levels/stairs in the club made it even more difficult to move. If a fire had broken out in that club, we all would have died. I just never thought about that at the time.

It was fireworks and flares being lit off inside of the nightclub. Perhaps part of a pyrotechic show by a guy on stage but yeah it was fireworks and flares... why those should ever be lit off in a night club is fucking beyond me.

why didn't they just beat the hell outta the bouncers? I mean it seems weird.

either way that club is fucked now. they shoulda just eaten it on the bar tabs.

^ From a report i read, Nobody was specifically burned alive( or very few) but almost everyone died of asphyxiation and poison by smoke. Not that that's much better, must have been terrifying

Tragic stuff. I don't think people realise how quickly fire spreads. Visibility would have been down to zero within minutes and a person can be overcome by smoke inhalation by taking in just two breaths of the stuff. 
I hope this tragedy leads to better fire safety measures throughout Brazil and the whole of South America. When I read about the venue being full beyond capacity and there only being one fire escape it's lucky there weren't more deaths.

Probably a lack of proper fire procedure too. Im sure the bouncers would of let people out faster if there was proper fire alarms or they heard a call over the radio about the fire, obviously didnt happen immediately as it should, as a bouncer myself I know we have specific code words for fire and its severity but maybe that isnt the case in Brazil.

Hard to comprehend 233 people dieing in a club. One working fire exit, poor lighting, overdue license, pyrotechnics inside and bouncers stopping ppl escaping, what chance did they have?

As sad as it is to say, it's the same old story. Read about any nightclub fire in the last 50 years, and it's just about the same things leading to the same problems which cause deaths.

overcrowded+few exits+pyrotechnics/cigarettes (or some other ignition source)+no real safety laws followed=lots of people dead.

that was actually the exact fire I had in mind when I read about this. What was it, something like 500 people died?

It really makes you realize how far safety standards have come. It's not a great comparison, but I always think of 9/11. 3,000 people total died in 4 plane crashes, 3 building collapses, and a 4th building partially collapsing.

When you compare that to almost 500 people dying in a tiny little nightclub, it seems insane that anyone survived anything.

And that's really shady that they didn't let people out at the first sign of fire. I feel like if your club is burning you forfeit the ability to collect peoples bar tabs. Fire safety measure and building codes in some countries are pretty much non existent.

As shitty as it is hopefully this will help lead to some added safety precautions for the future. Unfortunately there will always be some places that are sketchy as fuck, and that chance of something bad just happening out of nowhere.

Makes you appreciate the sometimes annoying as fuck to deal with codes and inspections we have here in America(And probably some of the other countries you guys are from)
