Can I tell if my core is rotten?

So I got a coreshot a couple of seasons ago and got it repaired at a shop. Since then the ptex has stayed in but at some point cracks started appearing in it so it looks like water has been getting in for awhile. Now the same ski has gotten another core shot but am not sure it's worth fixing a ski that will snap any moment.
So I'm wondering whether there is a way to tell at home whether or not the core is rotten. Or if, based on the situation, there is any way the core hasn't rotten.

Get it repaired ASAP. It will rot, and you will hate life.

I'm just impressed that a ptex job has lasted more than a season. But it normally will crack. Depending on the shop, they may have put some epoxy below the ptex so that the core wouldn't be exposed if it does come out. Just get that one repetexed, and do the same to the other one. You can easily do it at home with some very basic knowledge and tools.
