i don't understand all these people talking about disco. it has a few disco sounding songs, yes, but there's also tons of completely different shit. like ridiculous rock ballads, old house sounds, and lots of very quintessential discovery-era sounds. i feel like people who have actually listened to the whole album aren't calling it disco remix music
I listened to around 5 songs and I didn't feel the need to pursue more. Point out the least disco oriented song and I will listen to it if I haven't already
Ive listed to it 3 times through.... its great, musically. seamless and reminiscent of disco funk with an undeniable (but-fresh) Daft punk sound. it has its ups and downs. but lets be honest, its not FUN... im not asking for bass drop n' EDM all-out, but it could have been so much more than " a piece of art" or a commentratry on where music should be going.
i have such a raging boner for this album. listened through twice yesterday, probably twice again today.
REAL POLL
who actually has purchased the album and who just stole it? haha honestly i havent purchased a digital copy, but i ordered the LP from Amazon. (partially because i wanted it and partially because i had $20 to amazon)
i pre ordered it from itunes and i've been listening to the itunes stream. i have every daft punk album and i bought them all (with the exception of alive 2007) since i want it to be at least decent quality
I am definitely listening to a pirated copy right now, think I'm going to get the LP once my next pay cheque comes in though. Really like what I'm hearing so far, definitely worth adding to my collection.
a friend sent me the link to a pirated copy but the quality was total shit so i'm still listening to the whole album stream. most of the time daft punk sounds much worse in worse quality since they produce the shit out of everything and love putting in little things in the background that give you goosebumps. i'd love to find a flac copy once the album comes out
Someone put the full album on youtube in HD, I downloaded it with a youtube converter, then used Audacity (music software for mac) to splice out specific songs I liked
so my current playlist on itunes has included Give Music Back To Life, Contact, and Get Lucky
i'd buy a real copy if i thought Daft Punk needed the money. yes, they deserve it, but they'll get it regardless of whether or not I throw down 12 bucks.
I'm sort of disappointed. It DOES sound just like Chromeo...granted, Chromeo sounded like Daft Punk...so, yeah...but in any case, man...just not feeling it the way I want to be.
I was 17 and working in a record store when Discovery came out and it was one of my all-time favorite records. This new record to me sounds like demos, outtakes, b-sides, and unused tracks from the Discovery album. Some solid songs to be sure, but just not doing it for me.
I really dont think they will outdo themselves after Discovery. I would not go as far as calling these songs demos or b-sides but just a different direction. There definitely are some stand outs but as a whole it is nothing epic or life changing. It will definitely be a grower, but I do like it more than human after all.
i think it was necessary for them to have such a complicated album that so much thought went into, especially after human after all. I liked haa but it got a lot of shit for being put together so quickly and being very repetitive, so i think they went back to the realm of discovery to try and make something that has everything
also it's daft punk. everyone expects the absolute best out of them, and i think the mere fact that this album isn't disappointing upon first listen is good enough. i've listened through like 5 times now, and upwards of 10 times to songs like contact, doin it right, giorgio, instant crush, and some others and it only gets better each time. instead of getting sick of it i just want to listen more and more
I swear this happens with any anticipated release.
Hardcore fans always hate new albums by their favorite artists, but then 3 years later they look back at it as a great release. When you expect perfection you're just not really going to get it.
I definitely agree with the idea about expectations affecting the reception, but for me, I know this isn't simply a case of longtime jaded fan shenanigans. I very well could come around to really love this record, but it isn't the same thing as the borderline revelatory, climactic, and euphoric event that Discovery was for me. There's value to the album and its songs. but the goal of this record is seemingly objectively different than that of Discovery. That's great, there's an evolution and what good is an artist just repeating themselves, but I just think I liked the energy of Discovery more.
oh of course not. i don't think any album could top discovery. having an album like that come out while being a fan of the group is a once in a lifetime type thing
