Petition To Exclude Screen Captures From The Home Page

So now that Go-pro's can do 4k resolution and Canon just dropped the 1dC; screen captures are becoming a regular occurrence. I'm proposing a new picture section dedicated to video screen caps that is excluded from being displayed on the splash page. The page was supposed to be a place to display the amazing photographic talent we have on here (#nsismattsklarmedia) and then filmers have video of the day, and now a good chunk of the homepage. I personally feel that a screen capture is not photography, and is limiting the amount of real photography shown on that part of NS (WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE Mkvackay). So yeah, if a petition can get the entire site to change their names to milf and bukake, I think this ot to work.......

Its not that big of a deal, if your photo is good it'll get recognized regardless of screenshots being around, so just worry about your own photos

I think some screenshots are cool, but more in the sense as like a teaser for an edit. and I think the homepage is more like whats trending, I don't really view it as the proving ground for ski photography. Its a collection of things you might find interesting, because other skiers liked them. What would be really cool though is a way to filter the front page, kind of like the (maybe old) facebook news feed. You could set yours to show only trending photos, I could set mine to show edits and screen captures, and everyone else can go on their merry way. This way we don't restrict other people from getting noticed, but you can still get what you want. Short of porn/bannable material, I don't think the site should block anything from the homepage. Just some thoughts

I agree. As a group of photographers as a whole, we're not doing a great job at getting good stuff up onto the homepage and knocking down the crap.

Example: That photoshopped photo of Henrik on a small rail that made it to photo of the day (the photo of just the rail was also POtD too, while there were some FANTASTIC pictures denied fame BOTH of those days).

Because of the way the homepage is set up, it IS possible for us to make a difference. Everyone should skim through the latest photos section and make sure to give the good stuff the props it deserves. Then the home page would fill with awesome content, and the best of the best would be selected by the masses that doesnt do the in depth preliminary scans.

I'm not saying to go and downrate anything that isnt professional caliber work, but be honest about your rating. Sure something gnar, hilarious, or different can and should(!) get through every once in a while, but when there is other worthy stuff in the system being overlooked by something mediocre, then we have an issue we need to be responsible for fixing.

If it's a sick subject, who gives a fuck. No it's not art nor nearly as detailed as an actual photo, but for the most part I've found funny screen grabs/cell phone pics on here to be very interesting for the most part.

i guess it's more the principle, and the majority of newschoolers wont be able to tell the difference between a screenshot and a photo. for us media types it be nice to aim for high quality photos over screen grabs. we should have a higher standard for something like that. unless its something funny/epic. sorta the same thing as instagram as long as you know it's all fun and games were good. once it gets called "art" or "skill" is where it crosses the line.

I kinda agree with this. Sadly I think photography (without flash) is something that won't be around for a long time. In 6 years everyone will be able to afford a camera where screen grabs will be incredbily high quality.

i dont think that is a valid reason to ban that at all. think about 10 years ago, a screengrab from a 720 or 1080 video would probably be a pretty damn good quality photo. and now with seeing what a 4k screengrab from reds can do...

soon photographers are just going to be shooting video and grabbing the image they want from there. this doesn't necessarily translate to shooting ski photography but if you're shooting 4k/5k at high speed video you're gona have hundreds of different photos to go through and find that point where the composition/ skier/ grab are in the right position.

Well a screenshot from a RED filmed at 4K is quite different than a screenshot from a GoPro HD filed at 720p with blown out whites ;)

I don't believe this at all. As video quality progresses, photo is getting better as well. Faster buffers, faster focus, better sensors, video will always be a lower image quality than a single still. Not to mention flash (HHS) is almost essential for a lot of private park shoots, the kind of things that would budget in RED's. Thinknog weddings, no videographer is gonna have the time to go in and cap 400-500 images, and even then try wont be as good as how a single still can magically capture the entire moment.
