Helly Help

'water resistant' does not mean 'waterproof'. 'water resistant' will not keep you dry on a wet day, but it will keep you from getting too wet if you fall in something other than deep wet snow. almost all other HH stuff will, however, keep you very waterproof. almost any Helly Hansen jacket you go with will be worth the money and warm and dry. i'm not sure what the deal with the Code Down is, though. it seems like any jacket pollard designs would be waterproof and backcountry-oriented, but apparently it's not so much for the intense weather.

i have a helly summit jacket, i don't think they make it anymore, but it's great. very waterproof. the water stays in little balls on the jacket and you can blow them off, yay!

the code down is not waterproof because they would have to make it helly tech (3000 mm) or helly tech xp (10000 mm) and tape every seam (standard procedure, they won't do just the criticals), which on a down jacket is a lot. it would make the coat way, way too expensive. i think it's coated with a dwr so it will keep you dry on sunny days when you're skiing. if you want a sick looking jacket and waterproofing, go with the santo (bright yellow jacket pollard rocked most of the year) or the front line jacket. they also have a waterproof denim suit but it gets pricey if you buy the whole suit.
