MLK Day Off?

I was just wondering if you guys had school/work off today. Unfortunately my school is predominantly white so we were in school. How about you guys? Do you think it is right to send kids to school even if the school is mostly white on Martin Luther King Day?

I had off, I'm pretty sure it's a national type day or whatever and shouldn't matter on the ethnicity of school.

Yeah there were less than 5 black people at my school and we had it off when I was in high school.

My uni has it off too. No class til 5pm tomorrow either.

my school has no less or more black students than the average highschool, yet we didn't have today off.

yeah there are legit 5 black kids at my highschool and we're in maine, i'm going to go out on a limb and say that who get it off is not about the racial makeup of the school

I believe private schools don't have to adhere to any of the federal holidays.

And actually some research showed that you dont have to give the day off

Im gonna say my school is like 15% black and we got it off. I think it has to do with how much days are needed for a school year though.

It probably has more to do with the number of days you are required to be in school per year in conjunction with your teachers' union contract negotations. They probably bargained to have an additional personal holiday/day off in leiu of MLK day-- or they simply don't get it off. It has nothing to do with how many black kids are in your school.

My 99.9% white high school in Idaho had MLK day off when I was n High school. And my College in Montana has MLK day off. It's a federal holiday so most schools have it off, and I'm pretty sure to say its not because of race.

Probably dealing with the length of your school year, or the structure of your school year system.

my highschool's district was paid by michael moore to have MLK day off last year. he paid to have our central grade school's auditorium refurbished. michael moore likes traverse city for some reason

Where in Idaho? I had school today and there wasn't even a morning announcement about it or anything. We also have around maybe 10-15 black kids in my school since op made it seem like a race issue.

Yeah I'm over here in IF. Probably different curriculums. We go by trimesters so the momos can get their precious seminary in during the day

Granted ive been out of high school for 2 years now and these last few years they have tweaked with brakes so god damn much, i got some friends in the system that had 2 weeks off for winter break, and then they still have their finals after winter break.

i had it off. only thing that screwed me was the administration offices were closed, so i couldnt take care of some things i needed to. also i walked 30 minutes to the post office only to find it was closed too which sucked

I had yesterday off. I don't think MLK needs to be considered a "black" thing. I am white and I 100% appreciate what MLK did for this country.
