For most people, 5 guns is excessive. And realistically, most people should consider 1 gun excessive as well. The chances of ever firing your weapon at a person or even needing to brandish for a deterrent situation it is remote even for most of the US military. They are a luxury that our nation enjoys for sport, defense, and pleasure.
That being said, I exercise my freedom to own a weapon because going shooting is fun, if I were to ever eject and need to use an M9 as a last resort I want to be skilled, and even though the possibility of home defense is extremely remote it is comforting knowing I (or my wife if she was alone) could defend herself from an intruder. Frankly though, the chances of the last two reasons are slim at best....but they make spending money on guns soooooo much easier to handle :) If we all admit that most of us aren't really that scared of getting raped in our beds, we can't justify spending $800 on a sweet Sig P226.
Another thing I'll add is pure speculation. However, from my point of view I would never enter an American home in a million years. Even if I knew Jessica Alba was inside paying men $1,000,000 for her to give them a blowjob, the chances of coming face to face with an armed American ready to finally defend their home and use the hollow points they thought they'd never get to fire is enough to scare the shit out of me.
