I'm going to buy a gun.

So I plan on buying a gun and I wanted to look to NS as to where I should start. I am looking to get a handgun for protection, I've thought about getting my CWP and probably will. Should I get my CWP first then get the gun or visa verse?

This thread is probably going to go terribly wrong and end up in a gun debate but hopefully I get some useful information about it.

Most skiers live in areas great for hunting, which means a huge part of the community is extremely familiar with firearms.

I have a question. If I just wanted a weapon for protection(like to keep next to my bed) Would a shotgun with rock salt do the trick? I Wouldnt want to kill a burglar unless he was trying to kill me. Also, if a drunk friend came in I wouldnt want to kill him either(its happened before).

Everyone should own 4-5 guns in my opinion:
.22, 30-06, 12g, 2 handguns ( I want a ruger lcr .357 (for my cc)...380 is a a more vag gun, and a 2nd hanging for home protection.

I agree. A .22 is always a great beginner gun. It's got enough kick so you can feel what shooting an actual gun is like, but a low enough caliber for a beginner. I love my .22s. If you move up over time, you should consider a revolver. I personally favor them over typical magazine loading handguns. My dad and I share a .38 and it's great. Good luck mane

If you're looking for a great handgun for a first timer

Buy a Glock 17 Gen 4 9mm

It's such a reliable gun, the ammunition is cheap and gets the job done if needed.

Really glad to see all the actual responses in here. And not a bunch of troll faced gun hating pricks. I for one am to young to get my pistol permit of cc license but definitely plan on it one day. Right now I just shoot my dads 9 and I have a .45 long colt revolver I shoot. Also I shoot competitively, so I'm quite in the know about firearms and pistols. Some really good gun talk going on here. (Not a biggie reference)

vag gun? Like vagina gun? That little lcp .380 is so much more difficult to shoot than my full size 9. So much recoil on such a tiny frame. Certainly anything but a womens gun. Most women would shoot it once and never again.

And its definitely not a home defense gun, thats why i said i cc it. The 12g is under my bed for a reason

9mm is great for home defense and is cheap to shoot, as a lot of others have mentioned. One of the best pistols for home defense though is the Taurus Judge. It is a 5 shooter that can shoot a 45 colt and also a .410 shotgun shell which is awesome. .45 colt is a bit large for you if your a beginner but it's not unreasonable.

got a little defensive there. The .380 isnt the best round but it will certainly do the trick. I still tand by my earlier statement that the snub nosed judge is the best cc weapon. 410 and 45. That gun is in a league of its own

glock 23c or HK p30 are arguably the 2 of the better 40 cal handguns. dont go 9mm.

I shot my friends Glock 22 this weekend and that thing was awesome. Felt great, recoil was easily controllable and a .40 will fuck someone up.

Yeah but where the fuck are you going to put it?  I have a friend who carries a raging bull just so people will know it's there.  You can see the gun bulge plain as day.  Truth be told that has it's own effect, and nobody's walking through a 28 gauge slug, but to me, cc has to be more about actually concealing. 

I have another friend that carries a S&W 1911 PD (slightly shrunken frame from their full size 1911) with the scandium frame and honestly that's my fav cc weapon.  Small enough to carry, big enough to stop, and it's actually comfortable to shoot, much unlike the kid's warthog. 

I dunno, that's just my .02 though and everybody's different.

Living in NY is near impossible to get  CC, even applying for my hg permit took forever. 

All I was saying is that I prefer the lcr 357 to the 380.  In such a small package (and only having 5 shots with the ruger) why not just bump up to the 357, you could still shoot cheeper 380 anno at the range which will hurt when shooting a little less too. But when you have so few shots might as well make the best of them.

Just out of curiosity, where do you guys live that requires a gun for protection and feeling safer? At no time in my life have I ever felt threatened in my home and I've lived in some sketchy neighbourhoods.

I don't care one way or the other. I have lots of friends who hunt and have no issues with gun ownership. Maybe it's because I'm Canadian and haven't grown up with that whole mentality. Just curious. No hate intended.

Don't know if it's been said yet but maybe look at taking the classes before you buy. I know around here having a ccw can speed up the process of buying as you've already been run through the backround check and all.

Definitely shoot a couple handguns at a range before you buy though to see what you like most.

Ask any woman who's been raped, any man who's been jumped/mugged regardless of where they live...

I guarantee the outcome would have been much different if the woman had a tiny snub nose in their purse, or a man a tiny snub nose in their wast band, Like said earlier a lcr 380 or 357 are so small and more importantly reliable now a days, you wont even notice its in your purse/pocket/leg/wherever you chose to safely keep it.

well if you hunt, the 22, 30-06, and 12 all have different purposes, you wont take an elk with a 22, thats what the 30-06 is for, and you wont take a bird with the 30-06 thats whats the 12 is for.  And in my opinion 2 hgs, one for carry (smaller) and one for home defense( large caliber). 

They're good investments too.  At 2-3% inflation a nice piece will most likely lose less vale that the dollar in a bank account in 10 years.

The first thing you would need to decide is what size pistol you want to carry. Most compact and sub-compacts are going to be single stack, especially the pocket pistols. From there it comes down to feel in your hand, striker vs hammer fired etc.

Best option is go to a store and hold them, dry fire etc. If they have rentals obviously try them out. To get good you need to shoot a lot, with the current cost of ammo 9mm is definitely where it is at. And a 9mm jhp is going to be almost as effective as a .45 at half the cost.

I have a FNS-9, great pistol, only problem is due to their popularity they arent cheap. You cant find them under $750 anywhere around here. With guns I always buy the better option because like real estate they hold their value extremely well.

Good quality names in pistols would be S&W, FN, Sig, Glock, Springfield, H&K, CZ, etc.


If its only going to be for home defense then a full size would be great, but just realize that a compact or sub compact makes a huge difference if you are going to carry everyday. Much easier to conceal, not as heavy etc.

Or I suggest the Sig Saur P226. I've fired one of these and it is one of the sweetest firing pistols I've handled. Very accurate and very reliable. My friend who is in SEAL training trains with this pistol. It will easily set you back $700 or more.

I'm from Australia so I just don't understand the US gun culture. Unless you live on a farm and hunt I don't see why so many guns are needed.

Picking up my Kahr cm9 tomorrow for concealed carry. Ive been doing a lot of research and looked and shot a lot of guns and for a 9mm I think thats the best you can get as far as size and comfort for concealing it. Plus it has a great feel in the hand, SMOOTH trigger, and I love it. So pumped.

Id take a 45 over a 9 Forsure, maily due to the slower velocity especially if I'm using it in my house to avoid going through to many walls. Personally a .357 is my favorite, once my handgun permet clears (ny res here) the ruger lcr 357 willl be my first purchase
