I'm going to buy a gun.

So I plan on buying a gun and I wanted to look to NS as to where I should start. I am looking to get a handgun for protection, I've thought about getting my CWP and probably will. Should I get my CWP first then get the gun or visa verse?

This thread is probably going to go terribly wrong and end up in a gun debate but hopefully I get some useful information about it.

Just curious, I know it's pretty easy to get there. Might as well buy the gun first and take the next class you can get in to.

9mm is a great 1st pistol. Easy to shoot. Not much kick. Cheap to shoot.

Once you buy one, you will want more. I started out with one, and ended up buying and trading for lots more.

Buy the gun first. Then take the classes after you have the gun. I'd also recommend asking whoever would teach the class what type/caliber handgun would be best before you buy the gun or take the ccw class.

get the gun first.

If you want to carry get either the ruger lcp .380 or lc9. Both are designed for concealed carry. I have the .380 for my cc gun.

dont get a full size if you wanna conceal it. I have a ruger p95 as my full size and its to big to conceal comfortably.

This is true, but 9mm have barely any stopping power, which if he is using it for self defense he probably wants. But i see where you are coming from. It would be a great first gun to have but once you get comfortable with shooting it and just guns in general, I would definitely get something with a little more stopping power.

1.) take a gun safety course
2.) go to a shooting range, try out a bunch of different hand guns and see what you like
3.) research whatever models strike your fancy
4.) make educated purchase and practice to gain proficiency and ability to operate your new weapon safely.
5.) enjoy feeling a little safer in your home and have fun shooting.

I want to buy it for self defense, hope to never have to shoot or aim it at a person, but when I need it, I want to have it.

I am the proud owner of one of these....actually it's a baby eagle, i.e. 9mm.

To OP - personally, I would recommend a 9 mm. They're easy to shoot, and ammo is considerably cheaper than it is for a 40 - 50 cal guns. Plus, you don't have to worry (as much) about your rounds going through walls, etc. (if you needed to shoot it indoors) and accidentally killing an unintended target in the next room over.

No, but really a .22 Smith and Wesson Pistol is a great gun. Easy to shoot, not much kick, good for beginning shooters and cheap.

great gun but a little expensive. i would take the class first. they taught me so much about cannon safety that i never really would have known. i know its a hassle and your ready to start the process, but you have your whole life to own these weapons, do it right.
i know i know. you cant wait to pack some powder down with your tamrod. true, there is nothing more satisfying then sparking your fuse. but you learn all the safety basics in the class. just puff up before or something, makes it 420x better

Or get one of the new cc snub nosed Taurus Judges. Nothing says dont fuck with me like a pistol that shoots a 410 and a .45.

Its the ultimate close quarters defense gun. Deadliness of a shotgun and maneuverability of a pistol. Thats the next gun im gonna buy

Made me laugh.

I do have an MP15 that is a .22lr w/ 100rd drum. That I feel is fine for home defense.

Mainly the Russians, they have been out to get me since '94. But now I have the Czech's tailing me daily. And after the '03 crisis in Budapest, the Hungarian's are always watching.

The French sent threats back in '97, but I haven't seen any since '98.

He wants a personal protection gun. A .22 won't work. I decided to go bigger (.45) with my first gun and while I love it, I would agree with everyone and just go 9mm. Cheaper ammo and you can always go bigger.

im not gonna argue the killing power of a .22 vs anything. Thats stupid. Its like saying "yea, but you can still ski powder on 65mm waisted 210s." Of course you can but its not as easy and nobody should recommed it.

I have two 22lrs, a sig 522 and a walther p22. I shoot them more than anything because the ammo is dirt cheap. I would never grab either of thise guns to defend my home though and i would never cc my p22.

I would go to a gun range and try a few out first. I've shot various glocks and berettas, but my favorite is was a sig sauer.

i understand what your saying but unless if your dealing with a real psychopath, any run of the mill home invader or burglar is gonna get the fuck out when bullets start flying, especially if they have been shot.

I'm not saying to get a .45 is wrong. If that what you feel more comfortable with then by all means, it's your choice. But or a first time gun owner i would recommend the .22, and just because it's a smaller caliber is no reason to dismiss it as an effective weapon for home defense.

just my opinion is all.

The problem is that if said home invader also has a gun, you shoot him with a .22 and wound him, he shoots you with his 9 and kills you. You're trained and shoot him with your 9 he dies, never shoots you.

i agree to an extent. A bullet is still gonna fuck shit up and a 22 fired indoors is gonna be pretty loud and would scare a lot of people. I would rather have a 22 than no gun thats for sure. A 22 will still kill the crap out of bad guys.

The 22 is an awesome caliber and every gun owner should have one. It just wouldnt be my choice as my first gun for an adult.

a 9mm is a great first gun easy to shoot, not much recoil, and relatively cheap all things considered . i however for my first handgun got an xdm .40 tactical , full size with 4 inch barrel. of alll my handguns and i have quite a lot , 9mm, 38 special, 45 acp, xd 9mm, i have to say .40 is my favorite caliber. the ammo is still cheap , way cheaper than 45 and just a lil more than 9 mm. and a .40 in my opinion has just the right amount of power ( full metal jacket 180 grain hollow points ) , the right amount of recoil to stay on target even when shooting rapidly. i just love that caliber, and to be honest it is surprising to me that that is my favorite considering what i own. but i think that the .40 is a great choice for a first gun, i really like the full size since its not my concealed weapon ( i have a permit, and my .38 special takes care of that ) but its def my fav gun to shoot, just my 2 cents, 9 mm are cheap and fun, but don't have a lot of balls, and 45 ammo is quite spendy. thats why out of all my caliber's i think the .40 fits in perfectly in between as a good home defense weapon, and a very fun gun to go shoot without breaking the bank like i do when i go shoot my .45 acp ( xdm as well ) . i just love handguns ! and i would def recommend either a .40 or a 9mm if its your first handgun, and i know your set on ur brand pretty good, but if i were you id deff look at the springfield usa xd lineup. good luck , safe shooting . montanan.

i completely agree, every gun has it's place. You wouldn't go deer hunting with a .22 just like you would go small game hunting with a 12 gauge. And i wouldn't pick a .22 first for an adult.

If you read my first post i didn't even make a gun recommendation and i'm still trying not to. I said to go to a shooting range and try a bunch out, then pick what you like. I just didn't want him to write off the .22 without trying one because it "doesn't have killing power" or its so small its just a "girls gun". That was all.

Btw I'm proud of NS. This has been a good conversation about guns without anybody flying off the hinges. +k
