family guy was so funny until the last couple of seasons.

I kinda stopped watching after that episode where stewie and brian get locked in the bank vault.
That was hands down the least funny episode ever.

but I watched it again for the first time in a while last night and I was entertained

I really liked that episode. But I agree, there was a few episode in like season 8-9 that were pretty weak. Now it's brilliant though.

As far as Big Bang goes, everyone seems to watching it, and I can't understand why. It's not even bad, it's just incredibly boring.

You mean the third season? The show's best years were seasons 3 - 8 (roughly).

The Simpsons stopped being funny once its original team of writers left the show (i.e. John Swartzwelder) and was replaced by new guys riding out its legacy with marketable low-brow jokes (i.e. donuts, fat jokes, etc.) at the expense of the political/philosophical satire that made it famous (the name "Simpson" is derived from "simpleton"). It went from a witty discourse on the ills of American culture into haphazard pop culture references thrown on screen which demand laughter without supplying the facetious appraisal it's fans were raised to expect.

The Simpsons = smart jokes about stupid people.
Big Bang Theory = stupid jokes about smart people.

i really need to disagree with just about everything you said there, less the point about last nights episode which i haven't seen but have hopes for.

netflix has made me an extremely lazy tv watcher, and so i've found myself watching through all of family guy, something i really never thought i would do again. the early stuff is extremely ok. its got some funny moments, but in general the comedy has very little thought behind it. but, while certainly stumbling a few times along the way, it's been pretty consistently funny ever since about season 7, whatever any diehard simpsons fan who complains unendingly about non-plot based jokes says.

I think they had more amazing seasons than certain die-hard fans give them credit for. I am shamelessly obsessed with this show and I have found myself laughing hysterically at jokes from seasons in the early teens. Regardless, I think we can all agree that at the very least seasons 3-8 were the high-point for the series.

I love this show because as I grow older and become more aware of politically/culturally/philosophically, the funnier it gets. I have no doubt that when I'm in my 30's and re-watching the "golden seasons", I will laugh hysterically at jokes I never noticed before. Since acquiring the good seasons on my computer and serially watching them all, the show has become so much more hilarious than it was when I was little.

Simple humor about a complex subject does not equate to intelligent humor. It's essentially the writers incorporating quasi (i.e. seemingly but not actually) esoteric subjects in a painfully two-dimensional way, on the bet that those who have a basic level of scientific education will clap their hands and chortle because they "get the reference," despite the structure of the jokes not having any real subtance. It's almost like the show itself is a caricature of how stupid people perceive smart people.

if we're getting hipster here with "i watched this before" claims, i've been watching family guy since it first aired, got angry when it got cancelled, wanted to get back, got sick of it with everyone else, found refuge in the simpsons seasons that never got old, then came back to it with a more experienced and critical view. the old episodes are meh.

the problem the Simpson's had was that they ceased making subtle references and began making things far too obvious, and too much about pop culture. every episode has some current events parody.

watch Mr plow and try to link that to literally any event at that time. you can't. last exit to Springfield is one of the greatest episodes of all time of any show.


sidenote, tonight marks 23 years since the third episode ever, "homers oddysey" aired. a very strange episode, but the one in which homer becomes the safety inspector. i know that because i was born during the episode. so yay. happy birthday fujarome

Oh god man yeah. The first time I saw that show was on a flight to New York. I decided what the fuck I might as well watch this and I did not get through the whole episode I thought the acting sucked and it wasn't funny at all. Then they showed another episode I gave it a second try. No better. Its a bad show.

This. The jokes aren't subtle, nuanced, satirical. They are painfully obvious and simple jokes lacking in any wit or charm. Just because they reference physics doesn't make the humour any less stupid.

It didnt' insult my intelligence. I just thought the main character's voice was really annoying and everything he tried to reiterate as being "something that makes him smart" was pretty aparent and their way of doing it was neither funny nor entertaining.
