Morality Question

The local church youth group gave me a $25 K-Mart gift card for Christmas. I'm an atheist, so I feel like it would be immoral to accept it. I could give to the kid next door, or I could send it back to them. What do you guys think? Or I could get cash for it and buy a bunch of jackets from the thrift store and donate them.

If its bothering you that much, donate the jackets, the feeling after helping others is the greatest.

what was the context in which they gave it to you? did you say were a believer? if they just gave it to you it wouldnt be immoral to use it.

Def not immoral to use it. At the same time if you feel like giving back that's always good. Def feels good to help others out.

I got a $10 Tim's gift card from my local youth group at church. I haven't been to church in over 2 years besides this years Christmas Eve deal. I definatley felt like a dick for receiving it and whatnot, so I just wrote them a nice thank you letter in return, then paid it forward and bought donuts and coffee for everyone at work. Worked out good in the end, I mean who doesn't like donuts....?

Why disregard a chance to help others? I think OP should use it to buy cans of food to donate, or sell it and use the cash to purchase clothing to donate. Either would be noble and would leave you feeling good.

Yeah, last time I went to church was like 5 years ago, and it was a Mormon church.
I would assume its a pretty known fact that I'm an atheist. I go to a pretty small school.

And honestly it seems less like a gift card for being religious, or a bride to come to church, and more like giving them out to make sure kids get something for christmas.


Was this from then or something new? A lot of kids don't get shit for christmas so I can def get down with charity groups doing stuff like that to try and make sure everyone get's something.

I don't think so at all' the church doesn't do stuff just to help believers. They probably don't care. Do you think they ask people they hand food or donations too if they believe? They are hoping that seeing their goodness will inspire you to believe likely, or for the community to see the church and therefore their beliefs as a positive presence in the community. Go ahead and use it I say.
