I'm surprised at the amount of negativity in this thread. With only two sentences I would say that in my experience the vast majority of people around are still fundamentally good, and want to do good with their lives. But I would also point out that the most obvious change from the fifties, technology, has brought with it a great deal of cynicism, and the current obsession with media and electronics has drawn people away from the things that really matter.

Watching the Canadiens in the 50s would be pretty damn awesome.

If ever I were to travel back in time I'd have to have my computer with me though, with wifi and an adapter for the shitty 50s outlets.
