Ski Patrolers at Big Sky do amazing work and take huge pride in what they do. I talked to one of the lift no to long ago and the stuff they do is amazing.
However I'm not a big fan especially back home with the power hunger mountain hosts.
With the CSPS in Canada it's a volunteer organization, but the hills themselves will hire patrol as employees usually for weekday and night skiing and weekends will be volunteer. But from the 2 hills I've worked at it's been a bit above minimum. I'm assuming it's mostly the same everywhere.
yeah! how dare they tell you to ski safely! and how dare they not tailor the mountain regarding what's opened and closed to your specific skill set! damn them for trying to keep it safe for as many people as possible!
