I'm not religious. I don't believe in a god. But calling people who are religious "ignorant" or "stupid" is a bad generalization. My Aunt for example, is fairly religious. She doesn't claim to have all the answers and doesn't impose here religion on everyone else in the family. However, she finds hope, wisdom, and guidance in a lot of the lessons in the bible. I think a common misconception is that religion is just about believing in a god. For her its about seeking advice and inspiration, asking questions and learning lessons. If religion brings that for someone than more power to them.

that's what i was getting at. as long as someone accepts it for themselves and not because of someone else, it's no big deal and we shouldn't be worrying ourselves over them doing their thing

i like whats been brought up in here for the most part

"this.  hopefully the world will be rid of it after the baby boomers die off. then our generation can stop worrying about pointless things like religion, gay marriage, drug wars, ect and get on with life and the progress of the human race."

^this is where my beliefs are, hopefully in 10 years all of these really common sense mishaps wont be here, i mean theres hundreds of religions, and every single one of them believes that they are right, do people just completely not take this into account?

It's equally as hard to go from not believing in a god to believing. It shouldn't matter if a kid is raised with or without god as long as they are taught to be tolerant.

This thread is so weird.

Do you notice that the posts from people who have tolerance for religion are calm, level-headed and peaceful, and the posts that chastise religion and think that it should be abolished are hot-headed and full of negativity. Calm down, atheists, and peace be with you.

I was raised religious and it was incredibly easy for me to become non-religious. I just stop going to church and worrying about it.

Lucky for me I have awesome parents who love their kids more than their church so they understand.

If I said that santa put us on earth to build up the world so he could eventually enslave us into making toys at the north pole, most people wouldn't say "Well that makes sense but I believe in this".

That's how I look at is. There's this need to protect religion to legitimize it.


I mean in the end what people do on there own time is fine, but things articles like the columbine father telling us that all bad things stem from taking God out of society is just ridiculous.

Different cultures have their own versions of santa, they have their own versions of "God". You can do whatever you want with them but don't expect me to consider them to be reasonable beliefs.

I'm talking about later in life when the child can think for his/herself. If the kid was raised not believing in god it's unlikely that when they're older they will. Just like a kid who is raised with religion, its unlikely they will just abandon everything they've been taught for something else. What i'm trying to get at here is what you are taught as a child effects your choices later in life regardless of the information being conveyed.

No a proper response would be, "I don't think that makes sense (hence why I believe something different) but I respect your views and I will be tolerant towards them." (not accepting but tolerant)

no one expects you to consider them to be reasonable beliefs. People just expect you to have enough respect and tolerance for other people to allow them to have their own opinions and beliefs without berating them. The same way you think religious people shouldn't berate people who don't believe.

But you support gun rights because its not fair that the majority of gun owners get punished for what the murderers (the minority) do. Same goes for this, you cant blame all religion for the actions of the extremists which are the minority of religious people.

Is that really a bad thing? I mean if weren't spoon fed it from birth would you believe that noah built a giant boat and sailed around the world saving all the animals we have today?

You don't even have to be taught to not believe in religion. If you're taught to be open minded and don't somehow get dragged in by some church function as a kid, you'll probably never believe in god. You'll look at the bible and think, wow, this is ridiculous.

Ah, yes, just remember that YOUR dollar one has a tendency to bite back, some of us feel like OUR dollars are being used to do evil things, perhaps some of us feel like murder is worse than "creationsim retarding the progress of science..." I can think of some pretty good things that "retard the progress of science"

The main issue that I have with atheists is that they don't usually just stop at saying that the bible isn't accurate, or that it's impossible to be based on fact. They usually say that believing in God, period, is stupid and for people who believe in "fairy tales." It's just so black or white with atheists-- abandon anything and everything that has to do with religion, or you're an idiot.

Why can't someone adopt values or learning tools from religion that they think are beneficial and teach them to their children without being accused of brainwashing their child. There are different degrees to how religious someone is or how much they expose their children to it.

You can believe in God and tell your children that you believe in God without brainwashing them.

Just because somebody isn't blowing things up doesn't mean their views aren't extreme.

Religion is a sink hole. It retains it's members because that's all they've ever known. They've been taught it since birth and it's a part of them. If they question it they're wrong and it hurts to try. Guilt can be a bitch.


Those people grow up, they have kids, and they do the same thing to their children. It's a cycle. Most religious people didn't wake up one day and say "Hey, this religion makes a lot of sense, I think this is the answer". They believe in a religion because that's what they were taught from their parents or the other people in the region they grew up.

If snobunny grew up in the middle east, she would probably be a muslim. That's just the way it is with religion. People don't believe it because they've looked at it objectively and decided it made sense. People believe in religions because that's all they know and it's almost impossible to move away from it.

Then they have kids, and the saga continues.

I might be, but my First Nations foster sister who comes from a family plagued by poverty, alcohol/substance abuse, physical/emotional/sexual abuse, neglect, criminal activity, mental health issues and racial discrimination would and does advocate for more peace and tolerance. Don't assume everyone who preaches that message comes from privilege.

I disagree. This may be true for some, or even the majority. But it isn't true for everyone who has religion in their life. It bothers me that people who reject religion think that anyone who hasn't rejected it in its entirety is unintelligent. It's so arrogant and condescending. Just speak about the group that you're talking about (a large amount of people in the bible belt?), because there are people who have looked at religion objectively and decided it made sense.

I didn't say that you should be tolerant of people who are intolerant, that wouldn't make sense.

Why don't you just be specific? Are you talking about how some Christians are against homosexuality? I'm not one of them, I voted gay marriage in and have no problem with how people live their lives.

Again, I never said you should be tolerant of the intolerant. But some atheists in this thread are very angry at anyone who has any religion in their lives.

I was speaking about religions in general. Not even just christianity. Most people's religion stems from how/where they were brought up.

Yes there are people who have looked at religion and decided it made sense, but that's a small portion of the religious. A hell of a lot more religious people got it from the region they were brought up or what their parents/church drilled into their heads.

If you want to talk about the people that have looked at religion and decided it made sense, we should look at all the people who were brought up to be religious and look at it and say, "wow, this is ridiculous" and leave it.

If it was the ultimate truth as people seem to believe, it would probably make a little more sense to people and they might join.

For people who think that they found the ultimate truth just because of what they were told as a child. If you grew up in another part of the world you would probably feel the same way about another religion. How true are these ultimate if all these religions hold them? They are all different, and the main factor and being a part of one is simply where you were born, not the content of the religion.

I don't really like labels. I believe in a God, and I believe that religion can be valuable and positive if not abused.

I think that Christians who banish homosexuals are abusing religion. They should know that the Christian God is tolerant and loving above anything else and that what they're preaching is not the name of God and is wrong.

You're cutting of your nose to spite your face. Those who reject the hateful messages in the bible, and preach that religious people need to be more tolerant and only use religion only for good, and not for discrimination or hate are the people that can be most useful in the movements you're referring to. Because the church is not going to be destructed or changed from the outside in-- change will only come from the inside out. I don't think fighting or arguing with me is a good use of your time if your main objective is to break down religious intolerance.
