Why I Raise My Children Without God

It shouldn't matter wether a child is raised with or without religion, what should matter is wether that child was also raised to think for him/herself and to be able to form a conclusion based of evidence they think is credible. The problem is not god the problem is a lack of tolerance.

If you're raised religious it's not something you can easily get away from. It's actually incredibly hard to escape from. I'd like to say it doesn't matter either way as long as they get to a point where they have an open mind they can choose their route.

I guess it all depends on whether you're raised with the idea of God as a possibility, or raised to be religious.

this.  hopefully the world will be rid of it after the baby boomers die off. then our generation can stop worrying about pointless things like religion, gay marriage, drug wars, ect and get on with life and the progress of the human race.

Why not let the kid choose for himself? If he is capable of understanding concepts such as mortality and the afterlife, then let him choose.  The parent shouldn't be choosing whether the child should follow religion or not.

This. I was raised catholic and I don't agree with the Catholic Church, and I'm not sure about a lot of things. That being said, I live a completely non Christian life apart from acknowledging that something had to have made everything.

Tell that to all the religious fucks trying to rope kids in with free puppies so they can shove religion down their throats.

I mean the majority of the pressure seems to be coming from the religious. For a kid when you're young and impressionable, end up at a church rec program program or something of that sort and get constantly bombarded with do you know what's going to happen when you die? All you have to do is accept jesus into your heart and everything will be okay. That makes things pretty tough on young kids.


If they want to believe something ridiculous later in life that's fine, but I would def be trying to guide my kids away from it at least while they're young.

Implying its impossible to be religious and tolerant? Im a religious guy and am totally tolerant with other religions, gay people, etc. i respect everybody as a human being and as an individual despite having different morals or whatnot.

because if the parents go to church every sunday they'll want to instill the same beliefs on their child since they see it as morally right. it's not malicious but as soon as you go against it you're a dope smoking, liquor swilling, polar opposite of a moral human being simply because you questioned it. i think it's something that has grown over time and isn't exactly conscientious, but having something drilled into your head without asking why leads to a lot of blind followers who really aren't quite sure why they believe what they believe.

Well hes going to learn something from someone, be it you or his coach or teacher or cult leading neighbor. Its a parents job to raise a functioning adult and i think its their perogative to share their own worldview with their kids if they want to.

But most i just get irritated with these attention whore parents and their new age bullshit to get on the news. Oh my child doesnt have a gender, my child still breastfeeds at 15, i want my child to decide for himself when he gets punished or not. These parents are conducting social experiments, not raising children. I award them 0/10

It's not going anywhere. The world religions are still showing growth. Religion and god, whatever form he/she/it/they will always have a place in society.

and that's not necessarily a bad thing. i'm atheist but in terms of helping people find meaning and guidance in life, i think religion is fucking awesome but it's every single person that feels it's necessary to post endlessly on facebook and twitter, or question your personal beliefs, or stand on a street corner and preach to people about how you're going to hell and god hates you if you don't get down on your knees that gives religion a bad name and makes it an annoyance in society. i also can't stand militantly anti-theists who feel they have to convince people religion is stupid since they're doing the exact same thing they hate so much

My parents told me every religon in my area when i was 5 or 6. They said i could see how they were. I ignored there offer until i was 10. They took me to a monestary, a cathlic church, and a jewish temple and let me call bull shit for myself. I did.

I realize now, i didn't ask stupid fucking questions as a kid because i already understood that religon is a stupid excusse for saying you know what the fucks going on."

This is how I feel about it. My other post came off a bit dickish. I just don't think it's fair to blame parents for raising their kids non religious for "not letting the child think for itself" when you have so many things set up to trap kids into religion. Youth groups, VBS, rec programs, summer camps, and all kind of people trying to take kids aside and instill in them religion. When you're talking about young kids it's hard to combat that.

I do agree with whoever was saying that there are too many of these things making the news. At least this isn't really a social experiment as the other examples you pointed out.

good article but very one sided. the god she is talking about is christian/catholic god who is an omniscient man in the heavens who punishes you for doing bad things and has a set of wacky outdated specific rules that you must obey. that is 1 perception of god. this woman could use a lesson in ontology.

I was raised in a Christian family, as a Christian. But, my parents always stressed for me to develop my own beliefs. So, at age 15, I finally realized that I was an atheist.
That being said, I don't support this woman. She needs to present her children to many different beliefs, instead of sheltering them... That does no good at all.

If you present a child with the choice of beeing religious (where they supposedly would live in an afterlife) or an atheist (where you will simply die) almost any child would choose a theist path, simply because of fear. And that´s basicly what religious people do to their children all the time. They assure them everything will be allright if they acept Jesus/ Muhammed/ God. And of course these childen grow upp with this way of thinking. If they were presented with the same choice later in life a lot more would choose an atheistic point of view. Because they would probably realize that having an inevitable end of ones life is not necessarly a bad thing. That´s why religion shouldn´t be forced on children

You all imagine a world without religion which is the most unrealistic idea i've ever heard. Why not instead of saying someone is stupid or brainwashed for not having the same opinion as you, you respect their opinion and be tolerant of their beliefs. The world would be a much better place if people could just respect each other's views. I'd much rather live in a world with religion and tolerance as opposed to a culture-less waste land where everyone is the same.

people should respect other peoples beliefs, so you dont have the same religion they do or you have no religion at all its their choice if they want to have one or not, i mean im christian but i just believe in god, no bullshit i do believe there is heaven and hell. and do believe in god, but im not against gay marriage its peoples decision. not everyone who is religious is a dick and tries to shove it down throats

It really depends what you concern yourself with. That kid probably hasn't taken any Philosophy classes because he argues very poorly.

I don't think introducing the idea of a god into a child's life is a bad idea, but it can be. From an ethical stand point, I don't think we should worry about God. Teaching tolerance is so much more important than defending your beliefs of God.

Besides, no one can persuade me that god does or does not exists.
