Upgrading From Crop Sensor To Full Frame?

I currently shoot with a Canon 600D and I've grown tired of it. I'm looking to upgrade to something more professional. At first I was thinking of upgrading to the 7D, since I'll be doing a combination of shooting mostly sports and portraits. But, if I'm going to be investing a lot of money, should I might as well go full frame and get a 5D MK II, considering the 600D and 7D use the same sensor?

What lenses do you own? If you have EF then go for it, but if you only have EF-S then take that into consideration. The 5d2 AF is not fast, and you can't exactly shoot sequences, but I will 100% live with those any day for how much better the image quality is. I'd personally go for a 5dc (Balto and Timjen can vouch), I picked mine up gripped with a low shutter count for $650 from a wedding photographer in Kanata. IDK, unless you shoot video I find it hard to justify another $1000 unless your working professionally. Slow focus and burst is nothing I can't handle, and the images are well worth it. Peep Kijiji, tons of great deals on bodies there.

Get full frame, the difference is crazy, the shots look so much DEEPER than a cropped system. ALso I heard teh MKIII is fucking wild too, iso crankability like never before and a better image.

For just photos, check out the 1d mark 2 or the 5dc aka OG 5d. Legit photo cams, very cheap. But, if you have the skrilla, get the 5dII or 5dIII.

Bump because I'm in the same situation. I've been using a crop sensor cam with lenses built for a 35mm slr. I want a decent full frame that doesn't kill my bank account, but that's a challenge.

Have owned both, currently still have the 5d and I love it. 1d2n focus was insanely fast (using 200 f2.8L ii), as was the burst rate. Image quality was great for online use. 5d image quality is excellent, unless you are doing huge prints/need video, I would go for the 5d and spend the rest on glass (if you decide full frame instead of 1d2).

Why do you want a full frame camera? what are you shooting? photo/video ratio?

1. I have 3 lenses and a teleconverter from a 35mm Nikon FM kit. A friend of mine recently got a 6D and has been absolutely raving about it, more friends of mine salivate over the thought of getting a full frame (major peer pressure here). The performance of a 6D at 1600 ISO blows my mind. I have the money for the upgrade after selling my current camera and unused gift money.

2. I shoot almost exclusively at night or in low light. Shooting the stars/northern lights in and near the BWCA in Minnesota, music videos and pics for my friends who are into music (they like to shoot at night or in abandoned buildings). I shoot skiing obviously, 50/50 day to night.

3. I shoot 85% photos 15% videos. 17:3 photo:video (fancy ratio)

I'm deciding between a Canon 6D and a Nikon D610 or D600.

i'd stay away from the 600. the 610 was pretty much only released because nikon realized how hard they fucked up with the oil issue on the 600. apart from the AF points being all clustered near the centre of the frame, the d610 is a great camera.

if you didn't want video i'd say get a d700

Get the d610 , got it myself and its general performance is just crazy! Low light performancr is great an the amount of detai you can getl and the dynamikrange are superb. Also through custom firmware devoloped by nikon hacker you can film with 120 mb/s already.

if you shoot a lot at night and the 6D blows you away at 1600 look at the sony a7s at 16000, or 51,200 honestly, its insane

Whats the hype around Canon? Go Sony A7 for half the price of a 5D, It also shoots uncompressed 1080/60fps which is crazy crisp with a full frame sensor. Incredible low light capabilities for your high-speed shutters for sports and inside portraits and it compares to the 5D with 24 effective megapixels Grab a metabones for your canon glass and you're good to go!

Q. regarding full frame.
I know that is if I put a 24-70 2.8 lens on my 70d I'm gonna get an effective aperture of f4.4 right (given 1.6 crop factor)?
At the moment I am running a Sigma 17-55 f2.8 on my 70D. My question is am I actually achieving an effective aperture of f2.8 on that setup, or am I being cropped up? Would I get a shallower DOP with a 24-70 f2.8L on a 5D III?
Considering upgrading to full frame but need to get my head around how the crop factor works with aperture.

this post is misleading, the A7 does not shoot uncompressed 1080 60p internally, you have to connect it to an external recorder, same as a 5D. Lowlight performance and internal video compression is significantly better on the A7s, would not recommend an A7 for video IMO

I dont know if i agree with this,

if you are looking at upgrading because you shoot sports, I would get the 7d2

If you are looking at upgrading in general maybe go with a 5d2

I personally had the 60D and got to a point where i wanted that high FPS so i bought the 7D Mk II, i dont regret it, the crop factor helps getting close, but it depends on what sports you are shooting, i shoot team sports like Football, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, ect. And the 1.6x crop is helpful with that, if you are shooting Skateboarding or Skiing that crop factor might work against you, it depends on what you are shooting specifically (i assume you shoot team sports) and what your style is, if you go for those crazy wide shots from under a rail, maybe you want a 5D so the crop factor isnt fighting you.

When it comes down to it, the 7d2 is one of the most incredible cameras Canon makes right now, the 5d3 is great and the 1Dx is obviously unreal, but i dont think the 7d2 is "super not worth it" (P3t3r, correct me if i am misunderstanding your advice)

I would go with your gut, look at the specs for a 7d2, 5d2, and 5d3 and figure out what would help you do what you do the best.

aperture is not affected by the crop factor, only the length of the lens is. Example- a 24-70 2.8 on a 7d is really a 38-112mm 2.8.

Also.... d610 for any video has horrendous rolling shutter if you plan on running and gunning or doing follow cams. I don't think I've ever seen worse to be honest, and that was just slow-medium speed panning with it. the image is great but I have to be super slow/careful with it ot not get the rolling shutter.

sorta true but also not really true I think. In terms of depth of field the aperture doesnt change, but in terms of light gathering, it's a stop or two slower. (compared to s35 full frame)

S35 = Super35 = 1.5x (crop sensor) size. It's a term that comes from movie film (which, if I recall correctly, had to accommodate audio on the film in addition to the captured image).

Full frame = 24x36mm = 1.0x
